The Viper's strength is in it's outright speed and ability to accelerate in any direction quicker than anything else. It is not a fighter that you want use in a turning battle, plenty of other ships outclass it in that regard, including the Cobra. However, it'll punch in and out of trouble and give you the ability to dictate range in a way no other ship can. That's the difference between staying alive or being boiled if you've bitten off more than you can chew. It's also has a very small profile, far smaller than a Cobra which makes it harder to hit.

It's weaknesses are FSD range and fuel usage (you pretty much must have a scoop).

Indeed.....go to the map.....highlight agricultural systems.....then look at the individual stations in that system to see if that is one of their exports.

The viper is a far better lone Wolf fighter than the Eagle, compared to the Eagle you can outgun more ships and outrun all ships, while being able to take a lot more damage. The Eagle is lovely to fly but unfortunately it sacrifices too much strength for the agility you gain for it to be an effective lone Wolf ship. An extra hardpoint, heavier ones at that, more internal module space and higher class module slots so you can fit better parts. Mine is much quicker at killing wanted ships for bounty than my Eagle was yet has room for 8 cargo and a fuel scoop to prevent getting stranded/save time and money on refuelling. While I'm at that actually... The viper is seriously expensive on fuel. It's actually a bit crazy.

It's the perfect upgrade from the Eagle in my opinion, just remember that while the Eagle may be fun to fly (you will miss it) , it's the equivalent of a go kart. Fun for what it is, but it isn't something to stay in forever.

As for the Cobra... I'm beginning to think that it's an even better lone Wolf ship than the viper. Vipers used to be a little better handling, but now they aren't much better than a Cobra at all and with gimballed weapons a Cobra can match a viper on all but exceptional circumstances from the sound of it. From reading/playing it seems that the viper is suited slightly more to fighting in packs than the Cobra, which is more suited to lone pilots.

I agree - the cobra is better than the viper for lone wolf fighting (which is all I do), it takes quite a bit of a beating and is a nice mid point of speed/toughness/utility and firepower. It's arguably not as much fun as the Viper to fly but is a tough little sod even at stock.

Indeed. I was investigating USSs last night and came across a couple of wanted Asps, wasn't sure whether to take them on at first, but as the cops were around, decided to try my shiny new Warrant Scanner anyhow. Managed to make short work of both of them just by avoiding them getting a bead on me (they were "Experienced" pilots I think). Of course the cops flew through my line of fire during the battle, meaning I had them to contend with to, but my trusty Cobra wasn't really in any danger at any point.

On the other hand I was cocking about doing fancy flying in and around a deep space platform at one point, didn't see one of the towers impending during a tight turn- BAM, windscreen shattered, shields gone, hull instantly down to 18%! Ooops, expensive. Nice glass shattering and oxygen mask effect though....

Acting like a knob yesterday, getting annoyed with the game. My Hotas X was due to be delivered 29th Dec but just had a dispatch, will be here tomorrow so looking forward to that.

Cool, loving the viper! Clearing put wanted scum much quicker now. Just raked in 3 5k credit bounties. Simple guys but fun test.

A new question... I'm needing to get to LTT 18486 and I'm currently at LHS 3447. There is no way for me to get there... Any ideas?

I dont get this. I accepted a mission in bulletin board to fly 3 or 4 systems away and destroy two trade ships. I got there, locked onto a USS which was a trade ship (no idea if it was the right target) so duly attacked and destroyed it. Looked back at the transaction pane in left window and now the mission was something completely different; destroying 4 pirates in another system.

I can fly and manage ship systems fine and done some simple trade runs but Im baffled to be honest, Ive only earned about 3000cr so far.

Just had a brief session in Solo before going back to Open, which is exactly the opposite way around to how I thought I'd play.

Hyperspace and Supercruise lagging just as bad, plus I've now seen it on someone's YouTube :(

I was fine, up until today when I jumped onto online play. Drops down from a solid 60fps to 22-26fps... In solo it was a solid 60fps.

Confused about what to do in this game now. I know its a "forge your own story" type thing, and I had great fun during gamma working up from my starter Eagle to a shiny new Cobra, but now I've got that and got a bit bored of trading I dunno what to do. The kill xxx pirates missions confuse me as most of the time I fly to the system it says, search a load of USSs and then get bored (takes forever speeding up and slowing down for each one) as they don't have any pirates there. And the find some super dude in on of 3 systems missions I've read are all far too hard unless you're in a big ship you'll just get owned.

So now what? Mining? Exploration?

If you're playing an explorer on a single player game do you still get to discover stuff all on your own? Or is the single player game linked to the multi player game and it will already show as have been discovered by other players?

Why do you say you can't make it? The galaxy map won't always plot a route for you straight away, sometimes you need to wait in the galaxy map for it to calculate properly before it will show up as clickable. If I get no route plotting, I just line up myself and the destination on the map, then pick a system half way between and go for that. Upgrading your frameshift drive helps. Even getting rid of your weapons just to make the trip helps. I decided to sell up and buy a hauler which I outfitted up to 27ly jump range to do a big journey. Wasn't really necessary but was interesting seeing how upgrading to specifically only light modules made a difference.

The question about multiple characters, no not at the moment, not unless you want to pay twice :p

Someone passed on a good tip for USS's the other day:

SC at 30Kps, they still pop up with the same frequency, but you can drop straight out of SC onto them because they appear much closer :)

Great tip, thanks! That should help!

Also how's everyone doing on ranking up. I got to friendly with a couple of factions so not sure should I keep doing missions for them or fly to a new area entirely and start again? I guess ultimately I want to try and get rep up with Empire or Federation, but seems like that's all still a bit bugged according to the main ED forums.

From bounty hunting without being careful and from accepting missions and then failing to complete them I am now "unfriendly" with Federation - I even get a cold "conduct your business and leave" message when requesting to dock :(

Never thought about that- how does one conduct bounty hunting "carefully"? I have to admit I just kill anyone "Wanted" that I see at USSs.... Are faction allegiances obvious?

really don't want this to sound as a bash at the game because what's there is obviously pretty damn good but just wondering on what activities there is currently available to really do?

As far as I can tell you can:
- haul cargo (not everyone's cup of tea)
- mine (see haul)
- explore (very repetitive)
- find random encounters (limited types)
- find war zones (pew pew)
- run missions (limited types)
- pirate, yar

seems to be missing some fairly large stuff:
- group/guild/corp system
- area ownership of above
- crafting
- storage
- multiple accounts
- personal storyline
- organised pvp/war
- planet side activities (future expansion)

seems like there's less activities to do in this than the 30 odd year old elite: frontier

Im suprised some people are saying they havent seen a single other player.....the Anarchy System im Pirating in (I forget its name "Nimlble" or something similar) is so full of other players doing similar things, that when I try to dock at the stations, I keep getting denied as all the docks are full......took me 15 mins last night of spamming "request to dock" until I could grab a free spot.

might pop over, only 11 jumps away (41.42ly), any decent upgrades in the stations?
