really don't want this to sound as a bash at the game because what's there is obviously pretty damn good but just wondering on what activities there is currently available to really do?

As far as I can tell you can:
- haul cargo (not everyone's cup of tea)
- mine (see haul)
- explore (very repetitive)
- find random encounters (limited types)
- find war zones (pew pew)
- run missions (limited types)
- pirate, yar

seems to be missing some fairly large stuff:
- group/guild/corp system
- area ownership of above
- crafting
- storage
- multiple accounts
- personal storyline
- organised pvp/war
- planet side activities (future expansion)

seems like there's less activities to do in this than the 30 odd year old elite: frontier

That's pretty much correct. It's Elite! Definitely not for everyone.

Who wanted
- storage
in Elite

I like the idea of being able to store goods on a station to trade later; would add more strategy to the trading, especially for rares. Don't recall seeing it in the design discussion forums though so it's probably not on the list.

I do wonder how this would faire if it were released and the previous iterations never happened.

I think its safe to say it wouldn't do so well, however, without the previous versions, it would never have been made, I amagine a large proportion of the backers played the original back in the day....

On the other hand, with all the features talked about for the future, this can, and I believe, will be an outstanding game.

For the record, i'm hooked already - just hope my marriage will survive it!

Yes I think you're correct. I never played it and although I'm getting highly frustrated at times, I do see the potential for me to really enjoy this.

Grrr. I was hypersomething or other (the J key) towards a planet, found an unidentified source of something flying by. at 30KM/s and couldn't stop. Now I've lost it :(

I kinda see your point, but when I say it's not for everyone, I think Elite is a unique kind of game. If I think of myself playing the BBC Micro version back in the 80s, I wonder how I didn't get bored, but I didn't- I played for so long just to get that bit of white text that said "Right On Commander!" and told me I was Elite.... I was completely engrossed and kept going back to it.

I think the current iteration feels the same with just enough added interest. I look forward to the add-ons, but even if they left it here as it is, I'd be satisfied. I can see how lots of gamers wouldn't be though.

Also for me the experience is absolutely centred around the Rift. I think the immersion adds so much.

Did you lock onto it? Turn to face it and then target it (T I think) Once you have locked on press J again to drop out of SC.

I'm so looking forward to getting a Rift, I'm waiting for the retail version though.

Its funny, I invested in technology back in the 80's just to play this game, doing the same again now!

Mr1000, As soon as I saw it I could turn around quick enough and I lost it, thanks though.

Ah well. Also look in your Navigation tab, USS's show up there and you can select and lock on them that way, even if you have flown past it, then you can use the blue dot to find it again :)

It may have been mentioned before, but the sound of supercruise slowing down sounds like a tube train to me.

Had a ball last night, took a mission to get 2 palladium for 52k reward. Until I got to the station to buy some and realising that I didn't have enough cash for it (needed 27k). With an hour left on the clock, I quickly went about chancing my luck in USS'. After a couple, came across two security ships fighting a Cobra, I joined the fight and managed to get the kill shot for a 32k bounty(!). Made some decent cash from a few other wanted kills.

Think I'm gonna go the bounty hunter route, got a bounty scanner thing, just gonna kill some low level scum and save up for a cobra :D
