So nearly bought a DK2 for this, decided waiting for the retail is best for me. Actually find it hard to wait, still fill out the purchase details on the DK2 now and again and hover over the buy button for a while before closing the page :o

Is there any way of seeing what is considered "illegal" at a destination system from the navigation window?
I couldn't see anywhere obvious - only found out the weapons I'd picked up (due to the map showing an import/export route) were actually illegal when I couldn't sell them on the commodity market and I had to make a silly profit on them via the black market.
But being scanned could have made that a much worse journey.

When you select a station or outpost in the system map it should tell you its details on the left hand side of the screen. Prohibited goods is a section within that column.

I went to a random signal source and there was just a black box there. It flew at me and hit my ship then vanished. I presume it destroyed itself.

Sup, in terms of locations... What drive is there to move from one group of stars? I see no reason to really branch out and explore...

If you want to pick up stray cargo, deploy your cargo scoop (home button) then use the target to line up and grab it. Be warned though, anything you scoop will be considered stolen and you will need to sell it on the black market, and dont get scanned while you have it! (outposts are a safe bet, haven't been scanned visiting one yet)

Things like Black boxes are often mission targets, along with Ancient artifacts and Rare artwork etc.

Curiosity?

You may also want to build up reputation with the different factions, not really been following it, but tehr is a background story line (Empire, federation Alliance etc)

Like anything in this game, it depends what you want to do. Explorers aren't going to want to stick around the central human inhabited systems but for bounty hunting yeah, there is no reason you want to go far out. In fact, being central is rather key as you often find a need to collect bounties from Empire, Alliance and Federation systems all at once.

It had occurred to me that I haven't done the cargo scoop tutorial actually. Going to make a cup of tea and fire up the guide and see what I can do today. Feel a bit more happy knowing my exploration struggles could have been a big or lag although I find it disappointing it's an issue. I think I saw someone doing a silent run into a space station so he didn't get scanned on the way in, might try stuff like that now whilst I have no assets or credits to worry about losing.

Huh, well, it's a game that's got me gripped, but I'm defo settled on putting it down now. There is nothing to aim for other than getting better ships or maybe a higher rank?

Hopefully they will put some more content in. For now, I'll step back.

Right - so I'm killing bad guys in the resource extraction site just off George Lucas Orbital in Leesti.

This is federation space and I am killing people wanted in this system. Why after a bit do all the police start coming after me. I have not hit any of them, have no bounty on my head and am not wanted ?

Is it a mechanism to stop people farming wanted kills ?

Got all the way to Alpha Centauri, the idea being to go visit Sol, and it turns out you need some kind of permit to go there. How do you get this permit? Went to a station in AC thinking the permit might be available to buy, but nothing.

Kickstarter/Beta backers get the permit automatically, everyone else needs to build up the reputation with the Feds in order to get it.
