i7 or xeon?

If you have a Z87 or Z97 then overclocking to 4.5GHz really shouldn't be much of a issue, just a change of the multiplier and a little extra voltage, overclocking subforum can help with that and there's plenty of online guides on doing so, but as for the CPUs they are pretty much identical. unless you need a feature unique to either, then i'd advice get what's cheapest on the day if you really insist on not overclocking...

i believe that the other chipsets support unlocked processors with a bio's update, i'm sure i'll corrected if i'm wrong.

May i ask what kind of applications you plan on running with this system and what board you have?

Board is an asus z87 gryphon.
16gb of 1866 ram
R9 290 will be adding a second
I have a water loop

It's just a run of the mill gaming system and home use but I don't want to upgrade for a long time so wanting an i7 to cover my ass a little fir when game need a little more than an i5.

If you're not overclocking the Xeon is pretty much the same CPU, only you have lower power draw because it does not have any onboard GPU.

I *think* the Xeon may be clocked ever so slightly lower but don't quote me on that.

I don't like overclocking and it doesn't really like me but I went for a K series because they really are so easy to "tickle" up to better speeds.

If you are going to crossfire in the future I'd say go for a K series so you can bump up the clocks to take even more advantage.

What don't you like about overclocking?

You don't have to strive for the highest possible clock you can get, you don't even have to spend much time doing anything nowadays for a half decent overclock....

...just change the muliplier to x44 and leave everything else on auto, bam, finished.

But if it works without is the extra 10fps worth stressing the system

What stress? A little extra heat from a mild overclock? Maybe a little extra heat from the GPU running a higher load? It is designed to do that! :)

These are easy things to solve and sometimes don't even need a solution. The pentium K for example... I have one of those on it's stock cooler, at stock volts running at 4.4, there is no extra stress on it and it runs at <80c when fully tortured.

I wouldn't touch the thing if it didn't clock, overclocking it turns a sheep in to a wolf.

Anyway. Yes. 'Free' gains are worth it, even though it is relative! Like, going from 190fps to 200fps means nothing, but going from 20fps to 30fps means everything!

Yes if the FPS are down in the 20's then I would say your right but I would also say you need a new system to do what ever it is your doing. If it's struggling like this.

Anyway I have opted for a none k i5 4670, I have been told my mono should support the next gen i5's so I decided to save a few pounds and just drop a new chip in latter.

Maybe new systems are better and don't do this, but in the past this would have a high chance of resulting in the core voltage on auto getting pushed higher, sometimes significantly so. Combined with some mobos overuse of llc they'd happily go out of spec on auto :(

(I'm sure that on x44 this wouldn't happen anyway, just highlighting that leaving stuff on auto isn't the same as leaving stuff at stock)

Yes, I meant while leaving LLC disabled, not setting everything to auto :) I would not advocate using LLC on auto, its either off for mild OCs and manual for beyond.

I mean leaving settings at stock. LLC is usually disabled with many things on auto. Literally only changing the multiplier to x44.
