Counterfeit money

And how is it their problem if they have that note due to being handed it with change?

as has been said, once the note is in your hand, and you put it in your pocket, your stuffed,

in fact that's the other trick they use, go into a shop with a legit £50 pay for something like cigs, then they have two legit £20 in their hands, they palm them and swap for fakes then complain, asking for 'real' £20

on a side not, the easiest and most effective way of spotting a fake, is to run your thumb across the 'Bank of England' at the top of the note, they have never been able to fake the raised text.

Most fakes are £20's

If youve been given change with £20's you've paid with a £50. Which they WOULD defo check. That A gives you time to check your change and B possibly another £20 to check it against

You really like your absolutes don't you? Getting cash back at the till can result in recieving 20s as your change.

And as I've said, I'm not taking the hit if I receive a counterfeit note.

They should check it.

Most fakes are pretty easy to spot. You can normally spot a fake my feel so almost instantly you'll know its a dud.

If they are really good fakes then chances are the shops may not spot them either

So shops should use the ultraviolet machine on each note they hand to the customer so the customer can check.

Most shops SHOULD check incoming notes so outgoing should be already checked.

But you should do your own due diligence in checking your NOT being given fake notes. I do and always have done. It's instinctive. Unless your blind and using gloves

You all seem to be assuming that when the cashier says "oh its fake, I have to hold on to it" that they're telling the truth... I certainly wouldn't be just taking their word for it and potentially giving them a perfectly legit £20 note!

When I worked in a petrol station we used to check them, show the customer a comparison against a real one and retain the note.

I stopped using cash along time ago, I never shop at places that don't have a card machine -> salary goes in, card and direct debits take it out. Paypal is the closest cash payment form I use.

Simple solution, only accept cards. Job done :) Customer is trained to open a bank account and as a retailer you can't fiddle your taxes. Customer, HMRC and retailer are happy as repeat business may well result as there is less chance of the customer being shorted as well, or you handing them a fake note from your reserves.

Don't be daft mate, no one is going to lug around a UV machine to check a bit of man made paper

You don't need UV to check if a note is real.... (and even if you did you can buy a teeny tiny UV torch for £2.50 to do so.)

Counterfeit money is easy to distinguish from the real thing using touch. Let alone ones eyes.

Except that it isn't hence why we invent all these elaborate measures to make forgeries harder to make.if it was just a case of tell by touch then notes could just be a blank white bit of paper that says 20 quid no need for elaborate, foil strips water marks inking etc.

You have already taken the hit - For being daft enough for not checking the money you were given in the first place.

Your life must be a black and white movie, and no I haven't taken the hit already. As I've said I'd be getting the note back and using it at the supermarket. So no I definitely haven't taken the hit.

in fact here are some photos of it, with watermark, foil strip and fake serial number (known to police) it also has the ultraviolet markings, and before anyone tells me its an offence to have it, it is used for training till point staff.
