for anyone who bought the SMD5050 LED light strips off the bay, be warned. Mine have been great for the past month or so, until this morning.

Turned PC on and after literally three seconds, smoke was pouring out of the case. Thank god this didn't happen during the night, or when I was at work else the thing would have gone up in flames.

Pretty scary. I have them in my kitchen so would hope I don't have a repeat of this in there. Nearly 1700 units have been sold on eBay so I would hope we'd see some news if it was a common occurrence. Hope your incident was a one off.

Why are the scorch marks on the outside? Are you sure the cable wasn't resting on something else that was too hot?

Nope, the cables are all nicely tucked away around the back. There's absolutely nothing near them generating heat.

The funny thing is that the lights are always set to white. This morning when I powered on, they were in disco mode. I'm sure the control box just failed for some reason.

They didn't nearly burn your house down. Stop overreacting - they're low voltage.

240V maybe, the maximum of 12V found in a PC. No.

ah ok, I just figured with a melted cable and a ton of blue smoke it would have burst into flames if I'd have left it.

oh, and I'm allowed to overreact in GD :-)
