Should we worry about North Korea?

Question is can the crews maintain a high rate of fire and are the machines serviced well enough to not suffer from disastrous break downs very fast.

They have 170mm pieces, which have a range up to 60km. Its reported they can fire up to 4000 rounds per minute at Seoul. Obviously many of these would be destroyed by the USAF post-haste, but that still wouldn't save Seoul from one of the biggest bombardments since WW2.

That wouldn't inflict that much damage, that artillery wouldn't live for very long at all.

My money would be on some bad ass nuke being dropped on Seoul, I am sure N.Korea knows that as soon as war starts, they have few hours before they are turned into stone age...

Hence I am pretty sure they would go with nuke scenario... If they drop something like tsar bomb or even half the size, you can essentially count on on whole population of the city being dead, aka 10 million of it.

I suspect they can last long enough to turn much of Seoul to rubble.

Well it depends how quickly the US can respond.

I doubt they'd get past the airforce.

Maybe something like what the UK used to fear a bomb shipped in on a container.

It wouldn't surprise me if the South Koreans don't have some sort of Force Field that can pop up in a second that would stop incoming missiles. They have some special technology over there.. ;) Maybe built out of Samsung TVs and Galaxy Note :D

Umm, are you forgetting about SK? They're just going to let their 655,000 highly trained soldiers stand around waiting for the US to save them?

They're more than a match for NK without anyone's help.

The largest mine field in the world standing between them and nk though.

Tactical strikes to take out air defences and then air dropping troops in would take care of that. Alternatively, I believe this was covered in a James Bond film, hovercrafts!

And how would that not be an equally large problem for the US/NK?

Nk probably wouldn't be sending troops down and the us wouldn't be sending troops in.

It's the air forces that would be going in.

But you said their troops would stop it quick 40km of mines an pre zeroed artillery ain't gonna be a "quick" affair to stop a bombardment

Clearly the only solution we have to deal with North Korea is a fat Jew and a James Dean wannabe. We'll send them in to take out Dear Leader under the guise of an "interview" and... wait a second.

When I was referring to 655,000 troops, I was referring to their total armed forces, weapons, vehicles (including nearly 12,000 artillery pieces) and all. They also have a substantial number of F-35s on order.

The point I'm making is that by the time the US acts, SK troops would likely have the battle in hand. NK may have 1.1 million troops, but they're not nearly of the same quality, nor as well armed. SK is more than able to outmanoeuvre the North.

You all seem to think that NK would stand alone if attacked, don't forget, the reason the Americans got booted back out of NK during the war was due to China getting involved.

That was a very different time though, when China was as much of an outsider as the USSR and NK. Today, China needs the West a hell of a lot more than it needs NK. The only reason to back NK today is to reinforce China's position in Asia, but it's outweighed by the likely damage to it's economy.

I think you're overestimating their political ties. Yes China supports them through trade and what not, but they certainly wouldn't wade into a war over it. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose.
