Could do with a new vacuum - yep really boring!
I want something reasonably compact and easily manouverable as it is for a couple of smaller rooms with nooks and crannys.

Obvious choice was a Dyson with the ball steering, but are they all they're cracked up to be?
The DC50 upright seemed to fit the bill but £250 so I want to male sure before I splash out on it!
I also looked at the cylinders they do but they seemed more expensive than the uprights based on features.

I bought a £100 Vax cleaner about 18 months ago and started having problems with it after 6 months. It eventually died about a month ago. I bought a Dyson DC25 For £200 to replace the Vax and its so much better. It picks up dirt/dust a lot easier and is generally easier to use. I'd say it's definitely worth the extra money.

I have a couple of Dysons, handheld from the old bedsit and for the car, and a cylinder when I got the house. They work fine... but pricey, not really convinced it's worth it.

Thanks all.
That Sebo looks too big and bulky really. However looking on the site brought forward a few others I might look at.
The Bosch Athlet and AEG Ergorapido. They are both lightweight rechargeable ones. Reviews seem to suggest they last well enough on one charge and the size and weight is ideal. The AEG also seems to come apart to create a smaller handheld for the car, so a bonus!

Bought this a few months ago and very pleased - 'Morphy Richards 732000 Supervac 2-in-1 Rechargeable Cordless Vacuum Cleaner' at Amazon. Ideal if you want something lightweight, cordless and easy to use. Handheld bit is great too. Not going to be as powerful a Dyson but for general use its fine.

We have a Dyson and I've never been impressed. Noisey, heavy, stupid clumsy pull out tubing thing - Wouldnt buy another. Had a tiny vax pull along behind you thing that was much much better.

These are on sale for 100 quid at Tesco Direct today:

Miele C2 Compact Powerline Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner

Pretty good deal, you can get decent cheap non branded repacement bags for them for a reasonable price too. I ordered one this afternoon for my my mom's apartment which is a mainly hardwood. Quite light and easy to pack away, I use a slight variation of it at home, not too loud either.

Funnily enough yesterday I also got the one Duke posted up for some office space, which is just two rooms in an office building.

Comparing the 2, the supervac it's really quite compact even compared to the Miele and can be hidden away quite well, it probably looks better if you haven't got space to hide it away easy as there's no hose or power cables. It's charged up, but not had a chance to test it yet. I don't really fancy giving it a go at this time of night, had too much wine and baileys to be testing vacuum cleaners on Christmas...

Bought a Henry a couple of months back to replace a broken cleaner. Well, the Numatic version as it has a longer cord and cant fault it. Lifts my rug clean off the floor if I have the little door at the top of the tube closed it sucks that well (oo-er)

Robustness? - too early to tell yet but there is a reason a lot of commercial places use Numatic/Henry hoovers.

Miele. Don't question, just get the best deal you can for your budget.

If you have pets, get one with the turbo brush, it's really, really good.

Would have said miele, but not sure what the ban on high powered motors has done for new ones. Probably still trump a dyson though.

Just got one with a low wattage motor and it's still better than the dead ~2kW motored Miele it replaced, which in turn was miles better than our old Henry.

replaced a 7 year old DC14 with a DC40 and its much quieter, lighter and all round a better vaccum.

i have never tried a miele but they seem to be the 2 vaccums of choice... i just prefer not having to deal with bags and the ability to empty after each use instead of waiting until its full is always handy.

Sebo felix pet here after reading several recommendations on't forums, can't fault it. Utterly superb. Wouldn't have another Dyson now.

Thanks again!
I will look further at all the suggestions. The Miele at Tescos seems a good buy. The other Miele seem quite expensive though, even compared to some of the Dysons.
A cylinder is a good option though as I could manage with just the hose rather than needing the whole manoeuvrability of the complete machine.
Some of the Vax uprights seem on paper good value but mixed reviews.

I looked at a which review of vacuums a few years ago and IIRC the numatic henry was the only one with a 'Don't Buy' rating!

Since 2005 my wife and I have gone through 14 hoovers. They never seem to last long and sometimes just a few months. We don't spend silly money for the likes of dyson though. Spend about £80 and always return them to argos under the warranty haha. 14 times we have taken hoovers back and paid around £16 a time to keep the warranty. How bad is that!

What on earth do you do to them to kill that many? I only had three vacuum cleaners across four decades od my life (including the one my parents had when i was little). I'm actually quite upset with my current Bosch Pro Parquet because the hose is falling apart and it was only bought in 2005...
