City Link collapses, 2700 jobs at risk...

am i right in thinking that city link are heavily unionised?

Most carriers are, certainly in the driver or warehouse population. Not that it will help much when their employer is in administration.

This line made me laugh :

The RMT believes City Link is a viable business concern

It hasn't been a viable business for about as long as I've been in the industry. I'm amazed they have lasted this long, they've already been in plenty of trouble over the years.

My Hermes do not operate in the time sensitive day definite market as the rest of the UK carriers.

They are also not new, and have been operating in one form or another for something like 20 odd years (as parcel net, Redcat couriers etc)

Ive only been doing this 22 years like I know anything about my competitors right?

Not really much need for the aggression/sensitivity there, Jez was only asking a question?

Lol, as if any of us really care about the courier industry anyway so no offence taken at all.
It's a race to the bottom as said, all we want as a consumer is a very low price. Myhermes will continue to gain market share if they have found a business model which sustainably undercuts their rivals, which is fine with me, I find their service just fine and they are backed by a huge successful parent so it's hardly an untrustworthy or in any way dodgy service to entrust your business to :)

Not always true, I am happy to pay more for a proper courier over MyHermes.

Same here .. When using a courier like DPD I have more confidence then my Hermes
City-link we used for a month and the service was terrible and when reporting the issues .. There was no care or consideration or action

Yeah there will always be some users and some circumstances under which a premium is happily paid, time sensitive is one in this industry.

The consumer broadband market suffers from these same troubles, consumer demand with a race to the bottom, with only a minority willing to pay a sustainable price

A lot of our customers are already pushing for free carriage .. That's what's killing it .. At the end of the day someone has to pay the delivery charge somewhere

thing is if you were to give most customers the option of free delivery with a shower of monkeys like yodel, or paying an extra couple of quid and getting a decent company like did to deliver its a no brainer

Yep. 99.9% of people would take free delivery.

Most people have no idea what is a good or bad courier, and most people will blame the retailer anyway.

Courier companies are anonymous to almost everyone who gets deliveries from them.

Can't help but feel smug about this, it was this company's attempts at being a parcel service that caused me to abandon my previous tech supplier and switch to OCUK/DPD in the mid 00's.

Worst delivery company ever.

My brother in law works there, well at the Coventry main hub.

He found out via sky news yesterday, still no contact from City link about it, just him and work mates playing a guessing game.

They probably sent him a letter about it but as he wasn't standing at the door waiting they just left without knocking and took his letter to a depot on the opposite side of the country as per standard procedure.

They posted two "sorry you were not in cards" on the (one) day they arrived leaving me with no choice but to complete a Forty mile round trip to collect :( I also found it impossible to speak to a human being since their automated answering system wouldn't tell you anything you didn't know already.

Stopped using them a year ago for all company shipments, drivers were good and for the most part shipment went well but if you had a problem customer services were awful, you could never get through and they could hardly ever resolve the issue.
Moved to ups

Feel sorry for the employees, the top level screwed them all over.

The best delivery guy I ever had was with CityLink; he even rearranged his routes because he knew I worked nights.

The DPD guy here does the same for me, I likewise ensure I get delivery done by DPD where possible, and sort him cold/hot drinks when he wants and usually a present for xmas :)

Good, I remember back in 2010 having to go to their depot in the middle of nowhere to pick up my parcel. Never dealt with them since.
