Just wanted to here from any ex smokers on how they are now breathing wise after quitting / time period?

Does it improve after time? can you completely heal or will you always suffer the effects of smoking?

Trying to get back into 5 a side football, getting breathless just walking to the damn place never mind trying to play!

Smoked for roughly 10 years, 10 a day.

I smoked about 50 a day for about 20 years.

Yup it gets better and you don't feel like your lungs are cracking open anymore / chest pains.

My Father in Law is 70 and was suffering from emphysema but wouldn't give up as he said he's smoked nearly all his life. Earlier this year, out of the blue and without us noticing he "just gave up".

Now he rarely wheezes or coughs up phlegm anymore.

The addiction really IS psychological. If anyone is making up excuses for spark one up then they don't really want to give up.

That's fine, Their decision. Carry on but don't talk BS about how you (anyone else) can't give up.

Hand on Heart it's the best thing I've ever done both economically and health wise.

Now I only stink of BO !!

Probably down to a sedentary lifestyle more than just smoking. It will get a lot easier the more active you become.

True, probably been around 6 years since I stopped playing. Although up until 21/22 would play footy practically every single day.

Was just wondering how much is due to damage to lungs.

Do you do any sports / exercise?

I'm nearly 54 years old so.. No I don't do any sports but I do host a kind of weight training exercise clique on weekends.

ie: Pumps weights-treadmill-punchbag etc

37 year old ex smoker (2 years "clean" but have been smoking e-cigs ever since).
I feel healthier, far fitter and have lost a few stone. Only real comparison fitness wise I can make is tennis and running.
As a smoker I'd feel pretty tired after playing 1 set of singles and struggle like mad in the second set. Currently I can last 3 sets and still have energy. Running I'd struggle after 2 miles, now its 3 :)
Quitting was the best decision I ever made and do not miss it one bit.

I gave up my 20 year addiction 15 months ago, cold turkey and no alternatives to nicotine.

I no longer cough up whelks in the morning and I am no longer out of breath with exercise.

The only negative I can recall is that I can't hold my breath for as long as when I smoked  strange.

Started then I was 15 and stopped when I was 22. Now 28 and still going well.

I had 2 weeks off work and decided I had to stop smoking. It was doing me no good and the Mrs hated it. We'd also discussed having kids and that wouldn't be a good example to set or great for their health.

I smoked for about 2 years so not as seasoned as most, quit in 2012. Saw the benefits immediately in sports.

Genuinely depsise the smell of it now though, save so much money also.
