BSOD R9 290 Gaming Edition

Hi All,

I recently upgraded my RAM, GFX card and bought a SSD. Also upgraded to Windows 8.1 from 7.

Since the update, I am greeted with the following splash screen immediately on boot up...

But the main problem is that I get a BSOD at random occasions, the dump files all point towards atikmdag.sys or 0xa0000000001.

Tried the obvious stuff - uninstalling / newest GFX drivers. New BIOS flash. Played with the settings in Afterburner. Made sure the RAM sticks are in the right ports. Nothing has helped.

Quick google search suggest it's a fairly common issue, and there are lots of threads where people have had success with various tweaks / fixes (which I've tried to imitate), but none have so far worked for me.

I'm thinking of rolling back to Windows 7 see if that helps at all.

Failing that I might RMA the card, but I've also seen threads where people have done this but still have the issue.

A few more details about my system :

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
Samsung SSD 840 EVO
Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11T3K2/8)
MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

It just crashed whilst writing out this post!! :(

Any advice appreciated.

Did you change all the components in one go? This could be an issue with your new ram.

If possible I'd swap back to your older RAM sticks and see if the problem persists. If it goes away, try each of the new ram sticks on their own next to identify if one is faulty.

I'd be trying the RAM first too ^^

Also Intel's X58 platform supports triple channel memory, why have you only got 2 sticks?

Can you get us a screenshot of your memory specifications + voltages using CPUZ?

OK I've disabled hardware acceleration in Chrome. Chrome is always open during a crash so maybe it is this...

I've sold all the old hardware now so I can't revert back to test this way.

Will memtest highlight dodgy RAM?

CPUz screen shots below :

Is there any connection between the weird looking splashscreen when you first turn the system on? Could it be a dodgy BIOS?

i was told by AMDmatt that is just down to the card not getting on with the uefi on the motherboard,

OK cheers.

Had 2 crashes since turning hardware acceleration off in Chrome so it isn't that...

I've got some free time this afternoon, is it even worth rolling back to Windows 7 or is that definitely not going to be relevant?

I also had the same issue and it was apparent in both Win 7 and Win 8.1, turning off H/W accel in Chrome did help, however ultimately my gpu had to be RMA'd due to it being unable to load drivers, the card was replaced and never had an issue since, l also replaced the R9 290 before it went U/S with another R9 290(P) flashed to X and never had an issue.

Sorry this does not help much.

OK.

Should I be using the MSI driver (ver 13.25) or the AMD driver (ver 14.4)?

If I do send it back, what is the average turnaround time?

I use my computer for my business, so I can't have it not working. Could I just buy a new card and send the other one back for a refund? If I do that, should I go for a different manufacturer in case there is a compatibility issue?

Cheers.

how long have you had your card?
try both drivers just to rule out a driver problem.
RMA can take upto 4 weeks depending on the device you send back.

About 6 hours after upgrading to the very latest AMD driver, I've not had any crashes yet.

Will report back at the end of next week if I've had no crashes!
