Looking for a GPu for my brother and both of these tend to sell for around the same price but I'm in 2 minds about it.

The 7950 has 50% more memory which will help but I don't think my brother is that bothered with maxing out texture settings.

The 670 was faster then the 7950 upon release iirc, is that still true today now the drivers for both cards have matured?

if it was my 100 to spend I'd have GTX670. but decent one like Direct CU II , Twin Frozr or Windforce, not blower/reference.

2GB vs 3GB is irrelevant.

How come 2GB vs 3 GB is irrelevant. Im only asking because msi afterburner regularly reports I am using more than 2GB so I just assumed it was needed. Is It a case of it just using it because it can but does not really need it?

I don't think it's irrelevant. It will mean the difference between high and ultra textures in game.

what game at what resolution.

Just checked now to make sure i was not looking at wrong values. Skyrim high res running round solitude. @1200p

well, modded skyrim was my guess. as that's about the only game that goes above 2GB at these 1000-ish p resolutions. that 1200p doesn't help either, but that resolution is not common with gaming.

so, to be completely clear. for 1080p gaming, 2GB vs 3GB VRAM is irrelevant.

Not really got any new top end games to try but i assumed they would use more vram.

Ah ok so even on new release titles 2gb will still be ok at 1080p

No no no no no.

At 1200p and less 2Gb or vram isnt enough if we are talking about max textures and max - near max IQ settings!

I have a 970 and I game 1200p.

Just a list off the top of my head of games that use 3Gb + of Vram at this res:

AC Unity
Watch Dogs
Wolfenstein
Shadow of Mordor
Far Cry 4

And there must be loads more!

For example according to this:

"Far Cry 4 VRAM & RAM Consumption

We expanded upon our VRAM test from the Assassin's Creed Unity benchmark last week, now testing VRAM consumption on various graphics presets. VRAM consumption hovered in the ~3.5GB range when using high-end GPUs capable of Ultra settings. Even at the game's lowest settings, if VRAM was available for use, Far Cry would find ways to put it to use; we saw roughly 2GB VRAM consumed even on “low” settings, proving that larger framebuffers are rapidly becoming relevant.

Just turn down a few details a notch and you're fine with 2GB VRAM. Often it doesn't make that much of a difference.

I'd still go with the 7950, though.

Getting a bit of dejavu with the Opethdesciple post...lol

Max details is off the table with a single card, especially a single 670 or 7950. As such 2 vs 3GB VRAM is pretty much irrelevant. Just because whatever game you're playing uses more than 2GB on a card kitted out with 4gb+ means **** all.

True, but surly it would enable you to choose higher resolution textures. Textures just sit in memory. The other details which need to be processed are the ones that need gpu grunt.

I had a 670 upto February this year and it never ran out of vram at playable settings, That was then and this is now so at 1080 no you won't be able to max out many newer games with either card even if the 7950 and 670 both had 4gb. Oh and I use 1920x1200 also :)
