So my HTC One (original) went through the wash on xmas day. I've had it drying out since in the hope that it would work. Today I've plugged it in. Nothing. When I turned it on for the first time it vibrated but then nothing, and then it just makes a twinkle star style noise and again nothing. I can get it to do this over and over by pressing the power button and the volume up button for ten seconds but it doesn't do anything else whatsoever. The PC doesn't recognise anything (which I'm disappointed about). I'm leaving it on charge for now. It's heating up like normal, perhaps it will work, I'm not holding out much hope though.

Anyway, My contract officially ends in september, my upgrade date is mid July. I'm with Three. What are my options here? Can I just buy a phone outright and it will work with my existing contract? One annoying thing is that I have a micro sim, if the new phone is nano sim or normal sim what do I do? Can I phone up three and have them send me a new one? Would this be a reasonable tenner or would it be more?

Also I notice they mention an upgrade early possibility, I apparently have to go to a three store and will be charged the remaining rental + a fee. Does anyone have any idea how much this 'fee' is?

In the meantime I'm going to go down the insurance route, washing machine damage may not be covered though... I'll soon see.

You should have no issues dropping the SIM into any retail purchased unlocked phone if you choose to do that, though I can't say if Three would charge for alternative sized cards if required.

Where from?

As an update, insurance route was home insurance. I would have to box my phone up and send it somewhere to be diagnosed. This process apparently takes two to three weeks. Well sod that. I would have to buy a phone in the mean time which is going to be £50 to £100, the excess is £50 so a total cost of £100-£150. Well I can get a direct replacement for about £300 which is only about £150 extra cost to me. Plus I would have the aggravation of getting screwed come insurance renewal. I think it might be time to look into proper tailored mobile phone insurance though. Perhaps I should have lost my phone rather than washed it, there'd be no phone to ship anywhere then, that would be lying though.

Right new phone time then.

It's really worth reading all the small print though. Insurers just love not paying out
