MSI 7950 Twin Frozr Temps?

Just got my 7950 up and running after some cabling issues. Anyway I popped open Rust and the fans kicked in quite loud, whilst playing I'm getting 80 degrees and a fan speed of 80% which both seem a tad high? Is it just me worrying or is there something wrong.

Haven't OC'ed the card yet its this exact card

Thats a bit high, how is your case ventilation?

my ventilation is okay i guess don't really know what i can say on it, I've never had a problem with temps before, but i did only have a 7750 in.

7950 will pull 3 times the power.

What case is it?

Often problems with temp are because of bad case air flow, if its not pulling enough air in from the front and sucking it out at the back the heat will quickly build up inside the case and over heat the card.

Make sure the Intake fan is clear of obstructions, if you can help it don't have any Drives in front of the fan/s, even take the rack out of you can.

The case is a galaxy 3 gaming case. The computer was bought a few years ago as a pre built on ebay, worst decision of my life, and I'm finally starting to upgrade it but being a student means I'm poor as you like hahah

it only has one case fan and in the side of the case which i had to remove as with the new gpu it wouldn't fit back together.

So i guess your next suggestion is a new case?

Not necessarily, its not a bad case, can you put the fan you took off the side and put it at the back as an exhaust fan?

I'm trying to figure out what the fan setup is on this case, very limited info on it, but it looks like it has an intake fan, an LED one, did it not come with that fan?

Its good advice to have a fan there, they are not expensive, i'm still looking for which fan fits.

There is no intake fan, just the small led side fan. You may be looking at the evo?

Possibly, some contradictory info on it.

Is this your case?

It has a space for a 120mm Fan at the back, the one you took off the side is an 80mm?

I'm still trying to figure out if it has mounting for front fans, some say they do, some don't, i'm trying to find a picture to tell me.

Can you look there, can you see any fan mountings?

actually, the front is solid, there would be no air inlet if it did have a front fan, am i right?

Just a query what psu are you running?
Humbugs def on the right track with case airflow.

Another thing to look at is the operating voltage that the gcard runs at to hold 960mhz on the core. It maybe be a very excessive 1.18v to 1.25v which is really needed for a 1100mhz/+ overclock. Using Gpu-z check your voltage under load such as heaven or valley for a minute or so, then let us know

Yes that is the case. There is a place for two front 80mm fans and one 120mm fan in the back. The front case is solid so the 2 80mms would be wasted money. And I have a raijintek aides Cpu fan so I doubt I'll have enough room for a 120mm fan in the back.

My PSU is a hiper type R 580w.

Just got the case open at the minute I'll get back to you with the voltage.

I'm thinking the same thing you are Dave with the Case having an OEM PSU come with it.

Good point also on the voltages.... but i don't want to over complicate things right now

Clearly his case is suffocating that GPU with or without excessive volts.

@ Snookums.

I take back what i said earlier about the case, its not good, really.

I'm pretty certain the small size and lack of air flow is whats causing the hight temperatures and fan speeds of your GPU.

I'm pretty sure a better case will fix that, i don't think anything can be done with the existing case.

A quick scan i found a relatively decent case here for £30, it comes with an intake and exhaust fans.

Aerocool GT Advance Black Edition Mid tower - Black

There may be others, but please run them by this thread before committing to buy.

Other than that, i would advise running the PC with the side panel off. That should help.

The psu is not an oem I changed it when I changed my gpu because it was a horrible PSU Im not even sure I could run the 7950 from it. What about the bitfenix neos? Is that case any good? I've got the side panel off now and just set the small led fan on the base just to add some extra airflow to the case to see if it helps.

I googled the PSU, seems decent

The Bitfenix Neos also looks decent, but it states "Intake Fans Optional" you will need one, or both.

sometimes they come with the fans they say are optional, so i would phone them up and ask.

The fans you would be looking for are here, £6 or a much better quality one for £12

The case takes two intake fans, if going for two the two cheap ones will do.

But as i say, ask about the "Optional" thing first.

At 80% fan speed its not good, and a couple of hours gaming with no airflow may push it over the edge.

Just opened up GPU-Z and just ran rust for about 10 minutes on fantastic, i got a max temp of 67 fan speed of 88, i presume VDDC is the gpu voltage which peaked at 1.17, max core clock was 925MHz and max memory clock was 1250MHz. Is this any use.

BTW the side of the case is off now too.

1.17v was that under load? GPU's like CPU's have a phenomena call "V-Droop"

The voltage will drop 30 or 40 or so mv when loaded, its difficult to tell what its at while idle as they under-volt giving you a reading of about 0.9v

1.17v looks like about 1.2 to 1.22v, i doubt its 1.25v, so not too bad but could be improved.

i can get into that later if you like, (no time right now) or Dave might like to step in with it at this point?

70'ish C is what you are looking for, but at a lower fan speed, about 60%, maybe a little more, i would say more than 70% at 75c is not right. (or borderline ok)

Don't worry about questions, We like to pass on what we know to others and help out, its why we post here, and all of us were noobs at some point.

The Fan, you can connect them to the motherboard and have the BIOS control them, if not a Molex Adapter will enable you to connect them directly to the PSU, sometimes they come with said adapter, if not they are a couple of £.

Yeah that was under 100% load those numbers. So I'm still running way too high right now.

Okay because I've only got 1 system fan slot on the motherboard so ill have to hook one up through molex.
