290X or GTX970?

The quick answer is if you are gaming at resolutions up to 1440p get the 970. Think the 290X might have an advantage at 4K and is a bit cheaper.

The 290X is faster than the 970, in some of the very newest games even the 290 is back in the race.

However where the 970 comes into its own is overclocking as you can usually go 20% above stock, putting it close to stock 980 and safely above the 290/290X. So provided you have a decent enough PSU to reduce coil whine I'd suggest at £300 one of the better 970 cards.

If your budget was £250 then I'd suggest the 290X.

Would go with the 970 with a 600 watt PSU, it would run the 290x just fine though but with no headroom for going SLI/Crossfire.

AMD drivers have been very solid for a few years now, so don't let the old AMD driver problems sway your decision.
