NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 Launch Date Revealed

**** it, going into market.
Slapping 16GB onto a card and selling it. Will make a killing, ignore the performance of the card as that's now irrelevant....

Roll up, roll up.
Selling GTX480s with 16GB VRAM. All your VRAM requirements for the next decade, performance of 2010.

When you going to put them on the mm? I'll have 2 mate, will the amount of vram available be 16gb or 32gb as I'd prefare 32gb tbh ;)

Looks like a s/h 7970/280x will still be the best (and cheapest) option for peeps wanting to upgrade (due to it potentially performing similarly and having more ram for longevity!)

I could still be proved wrong, but it looks to be a shabby state of affairs from nV :(

tbf a 7950 would match it

Another thing is, when you buy a mid-range card you don't expect it to struggle straight away. Well, this thing seems very under-powered going forwards. With the new unified memory of the current consoles, this years PC games could well need more, unless you want your PC games to look worse than a console game for the first time in years.

A 460 felt pretty bad-ass at the time. So did the 7850. A new mid-range card should be exciting (if you're not used to top end, anyhow). This one has "meh" written all over it.

Next AMD card, they have only just luanched their last one.
285 launched Sept 2014, so it is only 3 months old.

Just love the way that these cards get panned before there is any concrete info about them, let alone any benchmarks.

The thing is what does AMD have to answer it with?? I hope this is not an indication that the next AMD midrange card is meh too!!

Key point in truth and if AMD have something decent at a respectable price, nVidia will have to release at a decent price. I didn't expect the 970 at that price in truth and it is only that it is still selling well that retailers can keep the price high.

fingers crossed on AMD then.

I think the 285 was AMD's "meh" moment, really don't see the point of that card.

What AMD need is a 4870 moment where it offered a huge leap forward in performance for no increase in price.

That would at least force Nvidia pricing down as I suspect they get huge margins on the 970 anyway.

What's the point to that and this release you say?

Well this card isn't aimed at people who want the fastest and bestest and quite happy to save money and get a budget card. It will do the job it is asked of and that is that. Those who want more will have to pay for it and go for a 290/970 style of card.

nVidia don't know such things as budget.
Anyways stunning little card. Hope AMD have something to answer with this awesome new release.

If this is aimed at the £150 280x market, 2gb isn't enough. A quick cruise through some benchmarks shows the 280x is more than playable at 1440 resolution. The 280x has 3gb on board in order to cope.

Of course the 960 might be ok at lower resolutions, but will be subject to cost saving crippling exercises to make sure it'll be awful in the future, while the 280x is still going ok. After all, the mid range market probably doesn't want to upgrade every 6 months.

But it's nvidia, so whatever the card is like it'll be perfect, with a million excuses offered for its 'alleged failings'

Er which £150 280x market would that be ? £150 is 280 money.

280x's are £180-200+ (there's one on offer this week at £175.99)

The 280x is an old (Oct 1013) rebrand of an older 7970 (Jan 2012) that has been tweaked over the years. It was never designed as a midrange card, its heritage comes from AMD's top line card for 21 months until it was replaced by the 290x (Oct 2013),

The 285 is AMD's currant midrange card and oh look that has a gimped bus and less memory as well. But is faster than the 280 in most situations.

Lets wait and see before the 960 gets crucified.

I'm with Bru, lets wait and see before writing it off, performance should be around GTX 770 / 280/X region, but it wont be a sub £180 card.

And 2GB is not bad for a mid level card, unless you SLI 2 or more.

The bitcoin mining craze means there's loads of 280X 2nd hand for £100 or less. So if the 960 isn't a decent chunk better than the 280X, for those who don't mind 2nd hand cards, the choice isn't going to be hard.

Admittedly not everyone is happy buying 2nd hand.

I would be even less happy buying a second hand mining card. That isn't to say the cards have been beasted, just I don't know what has been done to them and that makes me weary.

iirc you can only sli a pair of x60 cards so three way is out of the question.

Pricing could be awkward for nvidia, too high most with sense will start looking for that bit of extra cash for a 970 or at what amd have on offer, I'm going to throw my guess into the hat at around £160, makes it as good as £100 cheaper then the average 970, though I feel it's price point should be around the £140 mark.

Could be a decent mid level card, remember nvidia aren't daft, they know this is aimed at casual gamers and those that play at 1080 or below, that aren't obsessed with ultra settings and not aimed at enthusiasts. For the target audience it looks appealing and I have no doubt that it will sell quite well.

When i buy second hand cards i dont mind mining cards,, often they have been run at stock Vs a lot of enthusiasts who have overvolted pushed for max clocks while benching .
To me second hand is always a gamble but if the price is right its often worth it :D

I see wccftech are saying that it is more likely to come with 4GB of 256 bit bus men on a cut down GM204 chip, which makes more sense and priced around $200. Take VAT into consideration and the exchange rate, off the top of my head, that should translate ~£150. If that is true, could be a winner on the budget cards.

My thoughts exactly. I'd be very surprised if this turned up this late to the party with "only" 2gb. (I say only because it's technically fine for most games, but the 770 has a 2gb variant and that card's getting old).
