Designer Fragrance vs. Alternative Brands

because in a blind test....

Of just 50 people, with no information on how the testS were conducted or whether the compared items retained their fragrance past a defined period or any number of other factors in determining the 'quality' of a product.

That 50 people preferred one smell over another doesn't really 'prove' anything.

no it doesn't - some proper tests/more information would be useful

but then neither does a person's opinion on an online message board... though I'd take 100 blinded participants from a basic, perhaps crude, test over a handful of sighted opinions.... the point about retaining the fragrance is perhaps valid and I doubt it was tested in this basic test. Pepsi beats Coke in blind tests with very small cups because it is a bit sweeter but people drinking larger quantities actually tend to prefer Coke over Pepsi. May be the cheapo perfume doesn't last... maybe it does - it is significantly cheaper though and is seemingly comparable, even preferable, initially to a product costing multiple times more.

no doubt the quality of ingredients does vary and cheap fragrance likely equals cheap ingredients... then again expensive fragrance doesn't necessarily equal expensive ingredients - it could also just equal expensive marketing budget and/or large profit margin for high end brand

you can no doubt also find moderately priced fragrances from independent producers using high quality ingredients and without the marketing/brand premium... then again maybe some cheaper ingredients aren't a problem with fragrances

frankly a lot of it is subjective and it is pretty obvious that a large portion of the cost of some fragrances is simply advertising/marketing... I really wouldn't put much emphasis at all on brand names whether you want to classify said brand as 'designer' or 'high end' or whatever classification/label you perceive that brand to have...

High end fragrances tend to be a bit longer lasting, though all aftershaves "go off" after some time, from experience usually a year or two when only half the bottle may actually have been used.

This is a fairly pointless discussion on any forum though as you will never actually know whether the "you smell nice" comments posted by others come from someone you, individually, would care to receive a compliment from. It could just have been Donna the **** from the Fox and Hound.

There is also the "feeling" of wearing something nice and "luxury" that you might experience from wearing a high end fragrance. Many people here would balk at the very suggestion of this as they will immediately pounce on this idea and call it vain.

Whatever you do, don't **** Lynx off though, because some users here get very upset.

Give over and stop being such a snob, no one would care if you said M&S, do you really think people give a dam about what aftershave brand you are wearing.

Why are people who don't like "nice things" so agressive to those who might? If you can afford luxury items through your own hard work or good fortune, why shouldn't you be mindful of it? You appear to have a score/value of 16 on something in your sig. What does that mean? It's obviously important to you, but why the hell should we care? Are you showing off?

I only buy from The Perfume Shop when at work and they have the usual special deals on whatever brand at the time and I like the smell.

So far the only poor fragrance I've tried has been the Beckham one, it has a weak strength fragrance and I can only liken it to being watered down.

I've had Next/Burton ones before too and they've been fine. If it's not ridiculous price or is on offer then I'll always give it a try if I like the scent. Currently have 5 100 to 250ml bottles yet to empty so I can try others once they do.

Err no, that's just the steam sig generator doing that:confused:
I can afford nice things but i don't go round telling people i have a £200 shirt on do i, same goes for aftershave, if i wore a superdrug splash on giftset and someone asked what's that you got on, i would tell them, there is nothing to be ashamed of telling the truth, people don't care..

I tend buy both same as with most my product purchases. Cheapos to get you through a tight spells and splash out on something a bit more exotic with marked increased in quality when your flush.

There's always the rule of "you buy cheap you buy twice" to think of so when you buy something more expensive you should be paying for better quality, something that will last and not need replacing for a good while. Though that is not always the case as all sides of the system of capitalism has been abused.

Though with aftershaves the majority i prefer the smell of are the more expensive designers ones (unfortunately). But saying that if there are good smelling cheaper gems out there i won't hesitate to buy and inform someone if they inquired. Lynx or Gucci i don't give a balls as long as it smells acceptable to me.

Nothing worse than a showoff hipster. Not cool at all.

Next stuff may well smell nice you you, op, but it wears off very quickly. After a couple of hours you can't smell it anymore. Works out quite expensive if you have to keep reapplying it.
