The un-wanted xmas present thread

I got this, still don't know what the ******* time is, I think its Tuesday

qvLZrVb.gif

What is this as I want one, who cares about the time when you have something as good looking as this on your wrist?

Lynx body spray. I mean, who outside of the PE changing rooms in a secondary school uses the stuff? The shower gel I can use, but last time I had a clear out I chucked about a dozen unused cans of spray.

To be honesty, a good few people in this thread are coming off as extremely ungrateful - either they received gifts that they don't "want" (perhaps make it clearer if you're after a particular thing), or they're not "expensive enough".

If you receive a gift that falls into either of those categories, instead of either bitching about them on the internet (how would the people who gave them to you feel if they read your comments?), or returning them, how about you donate them to people who are less fortunate than yourselves? Or a charity shop even?

It's quite pathetic really.

Why is it? Yes, be grateful at the time but when you give everyone a list and everyone gives you one, then you buy what is on their list and someone gets you something random as hell, why should you not say something?

My watch has clearly been used, is in a different box and doesn't work!
I would never in a million years buy that as a gift for someone, I would feel ashamed to give it as a present

The whole concept of having agreed lists seems bizarre to me, surely half the point in giving gifts is finding the perfect item for the people you know and love? Having lists seems pointless, why even buy each other gifts, why not just buy the things you want yourself?

I definitely prefer picking out gifts that they will like. You have to be pretty sure though.

If you have to resort to "the list" then it's either because they literally have everything already, or they want something rather expensive (so perhaps a joint gift/vouchers are required).

Its nice to give a present. Sometimes even your closest family can be absolutely clueless with gift giving.

My mother for example once gave me a box of crayola crayons ages 7-12 on the box, when I was 17 and no interest in art/drawing.

I always try and buy something meaningful/useful or fun.

I get those cans every year, but I never use them - I prefer to use aftershave instead. Bring on the shower gel though, that ALWAYS gets used!

I agree it's nice to give a present but it's nice because of the anticipation of the reaction you'll get, the look of surprise and happiness on people's faces. Surely all this is lost?

Buy me this watch

Cool, thanks

I don't see how it doesn't suck the life out of the entire process, without the surprise aspect, the already commercial nature of Christmas surely just descends into little more than an excuse to buy a few things but by proxy instead of personally. Different strokes for different folks I guess but you wouldn't catch me gifting to lists. If my gift got sent back, then I just wouldn't bother to give gifts to anyone as ungrateful in future (excepting obvious genuine reasons like non fitting clothes or duplicate items).

I was adamant with my family this year not to get me any presents, now I don't have a mountain of Lynx and tubs of Chocolates I don't want. Feels good :D

I think I stopped doing lists at about 15 :p

I think people take great joy in surprise gifts that have thought in them. It doesn't have to be expensive mind - my grandparents always listen to a local team on the radio so I made two voucher / tickets for going to see a game of their choice (with my company) and put that in their card. Or for my mum, amongst other things, I got a nice framed photo of her new puppy dog. Those sort of gifts always get the best reaction. Saying that, I always seem to put more thought in than my immediately family, which sometimes makes me wonder why I bother! :( :p

This exactly. I always know that I'm going to get a couple of specific items (a Kylie calendar from my daughter and a Beano book from my mum) but apart from that everything is a surprise and I try to do the same when I'm buying presents. I don't want people to know what I'm getting them and I put a lot of thought and effort when I'm Christmas shopping.

Part of the fun of Christmas is seeing the surprise on their faces as they unwrap the presents. I don't want to work from lists and it all be totally predictable.

I did suggest this to my mum but it didn't go down well!

Maybe next year it will be a '£5 challenge' year. I think i'll be in Thailand anyway over xmas and new year so no presents for me

I got a set of 4 glass tea cups/mugs. (not the nice kind horrible machine moulded with unfinished join lines

Reason: it had Tea written on them on English and I come from Britain so i like tea apparently. 99p Store quality 100% Chinese... Bet they paid a fortune for them too.

I watched the Robocop reboot on Netflix just before Christmas and thought it was terrible, gifted the dvd by my brother :D I dont even watch dvds anymore let alone crap dvds.
