Anti virus....Free for a reason

i don't use any PC is far too slow even without AV, but then again i consider 1 second an unacceptable wait for something that should be fast.. make me want to cry when I am trying to quickly browse and I have to wait 2 seconds for a page to fully render.

Get an SSD?

Windows built in av, routers hardware firewall and antimalware bytes is all I use. Plus common sense

as ShakenNstirred says COMMON SENSE . you cant go wrong with the free av solutions out there . my self i have been using comodo free and don't have issues .

You're assuming everyone has common sense.

McAfee has been steadily improving since their acquisition by Intel.

According to AV-Test, their 2015 version is not too bad.

You're assuming everyone has common sense.

Spoken for truth.
We are mostly a geek forum that should have a bit of common sense around computers but the vast majority of computers/laptops I have to 'fix' have been used by teenage lads who can't resist clicking on popups or attachments.

I forgot to mention this gem in my previous post, but went there to give my mum a hand selecting a new laptop and they tried this corker;

"We can do office and av subscription for £100"

"So how much after that a month?"

"Oh no thats it, £100 a year"

"But surely theres still a single disk licence you can get, one pc and no subscription?"

"Nope, i'm sorry but you cant get them these days, maybe an old copy of 2010 from ebay or something but its subscription only now"

It was at that point i'd finally battled the woeful 3g signal and straight up called him on it with a link, was a glorious moment. Needless to say its got office 2013 and comodo on it now.

My mother wouldnt have fallen for that, but it saddens me there are so many that would, i'm glad i went to help her hardware spec because it was worth it for his expression.

I sometimes feel like a mole when I'm in **the store in question** browsing. Hearing the pig-awful advice given to customers and biting my lip not to interject.

It's a sales pitch and nothing more... over the years I have many dealings with these buffoons and all they are taught is how to "try" and sell stuff to people. That's it. Period.

Stoner81.

I believe Norton is costed for a reason - to slow your PC down and let as much tripe into your system, then getting you to pay for Mr PC Engineer to come out and do a quick cleanup.

I just use malwarebytes and use my crappy laptop for any potentially dodgy sites... *cough* pr0n *cough* :p

Just to let you know, Microsoft is testing only selling office 365 in some of those stores. Some regions haven't received any office 2013 for over 6 months although it is still available online.

The best antivirus on the market today is 'Common Sense'

Common Sense tells you if a legitimate site is has been infected? Interesting.

Sounds like you're using a PC from the 90s or dial up.

I said its ok I've never had any issues using the free ones like MSE or AVG or AVAST to be told well they are free for a reason..

They say that because all they want is a sale like they did when they were caught out giving worthless advice about higher priced HDMI cables giving better picture quality when a cheaper cable does the job just as well.
