NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 Launch Date Revealed

Anyone in this thread likely to buy one ?

If it comes with 4GB and the price is right I might. No need for high end here and may be worthy upgrade of a GTX570 (that is still fine for my needs). Been tempted by the 970 but I can't really justify a card like that.

I am likely to buy one for the following reasons . . assuming benchmarking shows it to perform 'in its grade' so to speak.

1. I currently have an old MSI GTX 570 consuming (max) 220w in a mini ITX SG05 setup in my office running WOW (and office) on an std HD monitor.

2. I want to 'upgrade' the 570 - increase FPS, reduce wattage and heat and still game on std hd.

3. The 960 should be ideal for this, and I suspect this is where it will sit, and be aimed at - i.e. take over from the 750ti for low power, low price, low heat, in lower specc'd machines, like mine. for this I suspect it will be perfect.

If people want powerhouses, then spend more, I have 780ti sli in my main machine, but there is a market for a lower specc'd, efficient, quiet, cool GPU card, and yet still very capable for the majority of std gaming machines and resolutions.

This is the Overclockers forum, and by definition everyone here rightly looks to squeeze everything from the best components, but the reality is the majority of the market doesn't do that, and won't spend 200+ quid on a graphics card. for the majority, (and for my Mini ITX machine), the 960 should be perfect...

Gonna be a brilliant little card, we know how awesome Maxwell is already. I dont see this card being any different and at a great price point.

Not really, I've been arguing that 2GB for £200 plus is a ripoff for about 2 years, that's both camps by the way, which it is.

I mean look at this, card chosen at random, £260 with just 2GB of VRAM, and it's almost 2015.

As noted above progress has slowed to a crawl, while prices have increased, that's not a good situation for gamers is it?

It's not so much 'need' as a blatant rip off.

how can you say progress has slowed to a crawl, when you can get a 4GB card for £240 now..?

 lol, this as to be a mistake? i know its aiming for lower budget but

90%+ of games don't use over 2GB video ram at 1080p, which is the most popular resolution currently.

sure there are a handful of newer games which need more vram, but people playing those kind of games aren't expecting to run them at max settings with a 960.

If AMD's new cards get a release date or promo event (I hope they will soon), then I imagine a few people will wait to see what they have up their sleeve, before looking at this card. Critically, we also need to know price.

I get the feeling that the GTX 960 will drop in at around £160 intitially and fall when the GTX 960ti arrives a few months later at £180

I obviously won't be buying one having already got a GTX 780 and gaming at 2560x1440 but for the average casual gamer who plays at 1080p they could be decent cards. NVIDIA, over the last few generations imo have overpriced their x60 cards. I remember when the GTX 460 was released. Huge number of cards to choose from which offered great bang for buck and excellent over clocking headroom. Would make a great upgrade for my brothers GTX 460 but sadly can't see it being priced very competitively.

+1

I think this about sums things up.

I suspect NVidia will sell a lot of these cards and make quite a bit of money in the process.

Any idea on the UK street date for the card? Apologies if it's already mentioned but I couldn't see it.

Myself, being the definition of a 1080p casul, this card may be the ideal excuse to move on from my prehistoric GTX 460. Power efficiency is important for me. I think it really has to come in near the £150~160 mark and no more. The closer it is to £200 and I'll be better served just scraping a touch more and grabbing a 970. £150 would be bang-on.

I need a new GPU for a LAN rig (no way I am taking my PC), so depending on price and performance, this could be ideal. After seeing some of the posters here, there is zero chance of me ever buying an AMD GPU ever again.

I wouldn't pay for 2GB of VRAM now @ 1080p. Poor VFM and no future proofing.

What kind of future proofing are you expecting with this card? It's mid range with a mid range memory amount on it. There's no point loading a card up with memory when it cannot run the settings at fast frame rates which actually use up that memory.

Actually, it's generally a bad idea as the more memory you stick on it the timings have to be loosened slightly which will impact performance (allbeit only a tiny amount). Arbitrarily, choosing an amount of memory which is acceptable to have on a card is a fallacy.

Id probably buy one for my second system. The card in it is getting on a bit. For the system in sig, im holding on until something with a bit more oomph appears.
