probably very limited as my setup is very old now.

I'm after a new graphics card that's better or on par with 5870 ATI that can handle dual monitors (DVI) without twitchy flickering or having to under or overclock.

I mainly do Photo editing these days but game now and again.

£300 max lower the better etc :)

I have a post here as I have a new monitor and its annoying me while i edit now.

AN Amd 280 would be a good improvement over your 5870 and cost £145 , anything up from there just gets better but the gtx 970 is a monster card.

If you do photo editing, have you thought about getting yourself a new CPU? That will improve your render rates much more than getting a new graphics card. What CPU do you have in there? Something like the H81M-k bundle and this GPU here - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-274-MS would set you back just over £300. Or go for an AMD 6300 or 8320 setup which will also munch editing with the same GPU due to the multi cores.

Well the DVI to HDMI cable failed to do anything apart from make my screen worse! so for sure looking at another Graphics card!

:(

It made your screen worse? In what way

made the whole screen fuzzy blue! moved back to dvi. But will keep a look out on MM for 280x

would rather one just work right off the bat, any idea if running 1 monitor off DVI & other off Dvi-Hdmi would work on a new card?

i think its just the ati software buggy as helll

Yes, you can run 2 screens off one card happily, I do it frequently.

In your predicament, I'd consider an overhaul, given the age of your components if you game now and then plus a new CPU would help your photo editing big time :)
Is your mobo/C2Q machine DDR2 or 3? I'm assuming 2. I will also assume you have a reasonable PSU...

As you edit photos, the 8320 will do you proud, you can drop £20-40 by going for the 6 module rather than 8 module processor if need be, but assuming your photo editing software is heavily threaded you'll see the benefit of the additional modules.

The GPU is basically a slightly overclocked 7850 and will be substantially faster than your old 5870.

I realise you say £300 max, and I've gone a bit over, but I have given you options to drop it back to the £300 mark and this is substantially faster.

As you have DDR3, the above makes even more sense (unless you don't have ENOUGH RAM and need to buy more). I would double check your RAM is decent speed DDR3 ie 1600MHz at least, otherwise as long as you have enough memory you should be fine.

This comparison should give you an idea why to go for the overhaul (bear in mind in some scores lower is better, others higher is better):

That's of course without any overclocks involved either and I believe the 8320 is meant to overclock reasonably well with a good cooler...

Oh and as another benefit, here's the GPU performance (also known as your 5870 is going to look slow very soon):

The R7 265 should drink less power, run cooler, and most likely quieter :D

Should give you a very nice overall performance increase for your money, especially if you get an aftermarket cooler for the CPU and overclock :)

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX)

is what i have :)

and geez it seems processor power has increased some what uh..lol! :D

But what if i get the Sapphire Radeon R7 265 Dual-X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (This week?) will my system bottleneck or is this something I can progress throughout?

I just want to get rid if the screen flicker for now :(

Thanks

8GB I should imagine will be fine unless your editing gets intense :) I have the Genesis Grey too haha

And yes, you could get the R7 card now and benefit from the dual outputs, cooler and lower temps, and then upgrade the rest when you have some cash :)

Your CPU WILL bottleneck the GPU to some extent, but you will still notice an improvement and will just have a bit of leg stretch in reserve for when you overhaul the CPU platform :)

Sorted thanks Alex! I just hope that it cures the flicking issue is mainly all im after at the moment.

Will give me a chance to clean inside the pc too :)

So all i need is
