Why is this bloke being sued ?

Here they would book your bags to destination, and when you board flight one, you are implying you are taking all the flights. I can see it being an issue with airport security internationally.
Within the US it is likely a different matter, as hops around can be across the country, such things are a more rare thing in smaller nations.
No doubt small print prohibits such behaviours.

There was cheap flights to New York a few months back, adding on the extra flight from Heathrow to Oslo at the end of the return journey was working out cheaper than ending the flight in the UK for some reason. Was gonna book, but missed out by a few hours :(

hopefully he gets the funds to defend himself and they don't win.... they're just bullying him it looks like

frankly it is a cool idea

They'll probably argue that it's against their terms of service or some such nonsense, they're probably more interested in bankrupting the guy with legal fees and driving him towards throwing in the towel than winning though.

It is against their ToC.

The way the deal works is you want to go from A to B, but it's cheaper to buy a ticket that takes you from A to C with a change over at B. So you buy the A to C via B ticket, and then don't bother to board the final leg. Market conditions are the only reason they are cheaper.

The problems the airlines have with this is:

1) You failing to board adds delay to their departing flight from B whilst they wait for you to (never) turn up.
2) Your ticket (and thus contract of travel) is from A to C. Your baggage may go direct from A to C due to limitations or simple logistics, for a start. There's probably something about legal obligations or liabilities, because their always is, that affect this as well - particularly in the states because of their huge reaction to the 11/09/01 hijackings.

In short, I'm betting it's not just about the money - though no doubt that is the primary concern.

frankly price inefficiencies ought to be exploited - I hope that even if he does get his business killed over this the additional publicity just serves to encourage individuals to seek out these deals anyway

this is brilliant,

so you book A to C and board with a bag of poo in the hold, get off at B and let the bag travel to C,

=cheaper flight and some LoLs :D

Letting a bag travel without you boarding will not happen, they have to hold the plane, hold all, remove the bag and then find you to see what happened from a security pov.
It has been that way even before 9/11.

Surely this is just like booking 2 single train tickets instead of a much more expensive open return. e.g. Singles to London can be had for as little as £9. An open return is £100+

Airlines are just being greedy as usual. I hope he wins his case
