Two year old shot mother dead

I'd have thought you'd leave a chamber empty as well on a revolver for extra safety. Isn't that what they used to do in the Wild West? they'd leave a chamber empty when carrying their revolvers so it wouldn't fire accidentally.

No.

Having a chambered round is fairly common, law enforcement do it as well. It doesn't necessarily make it unsafe, as long as you respect the firearm, this woman obviously didn't.

Could the kid not have shot to wound rather than kill?

:p

Just a freak accident, nothing more to it. Poor kid will have to live the rest of his life knowing he killed his mother.

It's hardly a "freak accident" if a loaded gun was left in a handbag next to a child. The chances of something happening were comparatively high in the context of the scenario.

Very sad for everyone involved and it's going to be tough being that kid growing up knowing he killed his mum. Can't believe show stupid his mother was though, who take a gun to Walmart?

Very tragic story. As gun laws in america are unlikely to change, you would think the government would try to bring in some kind of program to teach safe gun handling. Aside from the mass shootings carried out by loons, the vast majority of shooting incidents in america seem to stem from the mishandling of weapons. As someone who shoots as a hobby, the emphasis on safety and correct handling and storage of weapons is paramount.

I'm pretty sure it's not easy to get a concealed weapons licence in most states, which she had. Those strict rules normally mean the applicant is generally fairly responsible and obtaining the licence may even require compulsory training.

If it was a revolver with no safety...why, just why when you're permanently surrounded by 3 munchkins? At least get a semi with a dedicated safety.

So sad :(

I dont think there is compulsory training for states that allow concealed carry? Iirc theres a 3 day waiting period in some states while background checks are carried out. Yet most rifles you can purchase and walk out of the store with the same day.

Yeah, maybe there isn't any compulsory training.

It is very easy to buy a guy edit: gun there.

We had a get together a few years ago and I walked into Walmart and bought a 12 guage shotgun, some ammo, a few boxes of clays and a few cases of beer. We were in and out within an hour.

And nope, we didn't drink while we were shooting before anyone gets their knickers in a twist!

We drank before we started ;)

Ive found the drinking before/during a shoot to be very prevalent among toffs at driven game shoots. Copious amounts of whiskey and gin before the shoot started, wine during the dinner break. Thank god i was never in front doing any beating. Probably would have needed body armour and a kevlar helmet.

Jeese...I wouldn't stick around if people were drinking before or during.

Being under the influence of anything + guns = disaster.
