Thoughts on Lightroom/Photoshop rig

Hi all,

I am looking to build from scratch a rig just for photo editing (no video editing) and just for general browsing/office work. I work mainly with large photo sizes I.e. 25-30mb a piece and do a lot of batch editing so speed is a key part to my design. I am aiming to spend no more than £700 but if I can find any savings then this can go towards a monitor which will be bought separately. I do not need an OSAMA so purely looking for the hardware alone with me building it myself.

I would be very grateful if you could look over my basket below and provide any comments/adjustments I can make please. My aim is not to over lock immediately if I can help it however it would be nice to have the option there for future use.

That was interesting, looks like I could benefit from an i7.

Will that mobo limit me in terms of a GPU should I decide to get one in the future for some light gaming?

That mobo is fine. But if you are going to game this will give you more room for upgrade as it is a full ATX board: YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£25 Saving** £363.98
Total : £373.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Just to add another thing. You many want to consider this board as it comes with this deal:http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18631511
YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£15 Saving + Gigabyte Free Upgrade ** £387.98
Total : £397.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You will want some nicer RAM than 1600MHz.

An i7 will also be a good move for your uses.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£25 Saving** £363.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED316G2400HC11CDC01) £119.99
1 x SK Hynix 256GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS256G32MNB-2201A) £84.98
1 x Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA200) HDD £54.98
1 x Antec TruePower Classic 550w '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £54.95
1 x Raijintek Agos Midi Tower - Black £39.95
Total : £728.44 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The SKhynix SSD is better than the MX100.

i7 and 16GB of fast RAM.

I *think* the majority of photo editing programs are more single threaded (they spread the load evenly over the cores available) and so going from i5 to i7 wouldn't make a massive difference (read somewhere that 2-4 cores is a sweet spot for CS6 Photoshop and after the 4 core mark it's diminishing returns really). Someone might be able to correct me on this though. Might also want to add a cooler on top so you can get a bit of a performance boost per core.

I'd want a large SSD as a scratch disk, and lots of RAM etc.

1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £179.99
1 x Crucial MX100 512GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter CT512MX100SSD1) £162.95

1 x LG 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM GH24NSC0.AUAA10B £13.99
Total : £721.43 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You mention using large files, hence a very large SSD so you can load the photos up quickly and edit multiple images at the same time
Someone may be able to correct me on core use however, this is just an idea

Thanks!

What do you think to this RAM - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ktdetailseite&emcs2=MY-060-TG&emcs3=MY-057-TG

Your links above do make a compelling argument for an i7 over an i5. Would I be right in thinking that if I was to over lock to 4.5ghz using the i7 I will need a much better heat sink for the cpu?

Yes you will need a better heatsink to remain cool at that speed.

That RAM is a great price, its very tall so selection of a cooler needs to take that into account.

That's a very good point - I'll have a look and see what I can find. Do you think it would be best to have the fan facing the sides as opposed to facing front and back given the potential space issue?

The cooler will come with paste.

Its not a great cooler by todays standards, the design has been around for years.

Aprt from the cooler everything is else is good.

Had my budget in mind when I picked that cooler as I'm already over what I intended to spend plus the reviews were pretty positive. Thanks a lot for your help - been invaluable :)
