Physicist builds Star Trek ‘Warp Drive’ in his garage

based on what was in the video and article it sounds like he's just made a fancy electro magnet..... magnetic fields can bend light and are part of the process of a redshift in space.

From what I understand I believe he is basically claiming that warp bubbles like a hypothetical alcubierre drive would create exist naturally by pure chance all the time and that with the right setup you could essentially hitch a ride in one and with a bit more progress make use of those that would put you where you wanted to go.
 
I was referring more to the machine than anything else, it just seems very much like a fancy electro magnet from the article etc.

The idea/theory of naturally occurring warp bubbles is fine, that's no different to a multitude of other physics theories we can't prove yet.

yea that's the impression I got.

wouldn't the power needed to warp space be beyond us anyway? the only thing warping space is super dense planets that do it on a tiny scale and black holes?

Photon paths are not normally effected by a magnetic field. Refer to linearity or superposition and Maxwell equations. But basically two EM fields don't interact without charged media. And photons have no charge. There is the Faraday Effect, which shows how the polarisation of light can rotate through a medium in a magnetic field, but that is a magneto-optic effect from the mediums propagation properties. Again the magnetic field and the EM wave (light) do not interact directly, but interact with the mediums dipoles.
Gravitational fields distort space/time, so EM waves moving through a distortion appear to be distorted from an external reference point. He's claiming to have locally compressed the space/time fabric and redshifted a lazer beam, so actually slowed the oscillation of EM waves by pulling on them. Maybe he's found something where Maxwell's fails and into new Quantum Electrodynamics but I seriously doubt it.

the fact that he is basing it all on a Bermuda triangle nonsense should tell you everything about how plausible his theory is.

people have been looking how light behaves in electro-magnetic fields since they were both discovered and nobody saw this supposed 'red shift', and he has in his crappy garage with his visibly crude equipment - really???????????

maybe he could team up with that bloke who claims he made a cold fusion reactor or whatever it was so he has a power source :D
