Question to Londoners, best area to live?

I've never seen the appeal of Clapham. It's so dull compared to the rest of inner London and it attracts the dullest people. The Northern Line is also the most miserable London tube commute imaginable.

Different people have different tastes though. :)

Streatham Hill. I live here. There is a train going to Victoria, takes about 25 - 30 mins

I am paying more than £800 to rent a studio for 2 people and it is pretty small and not including bills.

London is a very expensive place to live.

That's where I live too :D

Croydon is a poo hole and Thornton heath is particularly awful part of this poo hole. Move here and expect to get stabbed in the face by hoodies.

Clapham is nice

so you live there then? never had any problems :) the usual good and crap like every other area in london. Thanks for views like yours, the rent prices are lower.

Well i've lived around Croydon all my life so know the areas pretty well.

I've lived in Norbury, New Addington, Waddon and Coulsdon :p

and how many times have you been stabbed in the face?

I've lived in green lanes, wood green, tottenham and now thornthon heath and all of them are much of the muchness.. yes there's more crap going around the shopping/clubs in croydon but it's expected.

I turned a very well paying job down because it was in Croydon. I couldn't face working there every day :)

Anywhere but London :p

As someone who has lived and worked around London all his life I agree with Gilly. I used to love it but I've had enough now. It's great if you are young and have a social life there - and can afford a decent place to live. But I'd love to move away now.

I've been in Streatham Hill for 7 years now. Was burgled once whilst at work but other than that it's not bad. I do get frustrated with the locals at times but now that I bought another car meaning I spend very little time on buses means I don't have to deal with them as much. This is probably me being an uptight arse however.

I like Lambeth, it's no dream borough but it's not bad. Lots of Caribbean people, who I find to generally be very pleasant.

You could be in somewhere like Highbury for about that.
I rent a studio in dalston for 845 a month and its within 30 mins to Victoria no problem.

Also a pretty great area, Very up and coming.

I've been mugged in Norbury if that helps? :p I used to do a lot of work around Croydon, and have several friends who live there. Sure, there's a few isolated nice bits, but the majority that I've seen are utterly awful, and that's coming from someone who lived in Bexley for many years.

If you have friends already living in North London then do go there rather anywhere we've said - you'll likely lose contact with them unless you live close by. Croydon area is convenient for getting trains to Victoria and probably cheaper than average for London so that's why people recommended it I think. North has the advantage of being on the underground so really nowhere is inconvenient for getting to Victoria.

Very much agree - thanks.

If you are prepared to house share the most lively areas are going to be shepherds bush, east Acton, Ealing and Wimbledon, in your price range only sharing those areas. For one bed you have to go as far as romford in the east or Croydon south or high Wycombe north. Woking in south you get more for your money but its outside London and more on trains. North is OK if you don't mind sharing as well but don't know much about the north. Enfield is quite cheap like Croydon and romfors. well 850 for a 1 bed flat.

Pimlico could be OK if you can find a flatshare there and want a short commute - could easily walk to work

up to 900 a month does give you a decent choice with flatshares though might not quite be enough for Pimlico or Victoria

Islington though should be in budget - it is a fun area live too - plenty of bars, restaurants, good shops, pub theaters an awesome cinema... easy commute too down the Victoria line from Highbury and Islington

Islington is expensive even for flat sharing.

The dullest people? Quite the opposite.

My sister friend lives in clapham says its very lively with young people.

This is the sort of place i lived in when i first moved to london:

It is 650 for a big room probably bills included, on the central line by east acton you can get to central london with 30-40mins. I used to switch at holland park and earls court to get to fulham, its not that bad a commute. Its a lot easier to have just one train though as changing lines is more hassle.

Why does that matter as long as it is in budget?

His friends are north of the river... it is a nice area with plenty to do and most importantly it is also north of the river and has a direct tube line to his place of work.

I live in West ham, which is the world's most boring place, however it's well linked transport wise and we pay £1k a month in TOTAL for a 3 bed with 2 doubles and a single. My rent is less than I paid in Bristol (my double is £360). You can get cheaper rent if you're willing to look, and live in less 'cool' areas.

Well its preference whether you want a bigger room or closer to bars. Id rather have a larger room and a better house for 650 than pay 850 for a tiny room and probably not very big house but closer to going out places. Especially when you can get to covent garden or camden or angel within 30-40 mins on train.

From east acton/ealing you can get in to central or north london quickly and commute from within london is never that much of a difference in time where ever you go. The commute would be easier if he could fine a place near the victoria line in the north within his budget.

You can get to angel station from east acton within 30-35 mins and the same for victoria.

Shepherds bush/east acton is not that bad you can get to ealing in 10 min which has some night life and you can walk to westfield in shepherds bush or the bars around there or as i said go up to camden or central london. It is as central as you can get on the budget if house sharing.
