Hey all,

Had a rude awakening last night at 5am from a massive bang, a nice flash of light and then the back cover of a Samsung phone charger hitting the floor across the room.

I'm not sure what happened, whether the phone or the charger is at fault but should I get the phone checked/bin it/charge it with another charger and hope its ok?

I've never experienced anything like this before and certainly will not be charging my phone while I sleep again!

Change the cable and the charger (well, obviously) out and carry on as normal.

I'd also mail Samsung's support department with pictures, regardless of warranty situation. That shouldn't happen to a genuine charger.

Unless it's a third party piece of junk, in which case was only a matter of time IMO.

It's a genuine Samsung charger mate. I don't know how much pressure must have built up inside to blow the lid off but something went very wrong! Will email Samsung :)

Probably just something let go all of a sudden, rather than a build up. Either way, not a good start to the day!

Be interested to see what they say. Have you checked for any recalls?

I've not seen the inside of a charger but Capacitors can go with a bang when they do.

Is it defo genuine.
I bought 2 genuine samsung chargers from Amazon. Turns out NOT genuine. Luckily it went fault within 20 mins and we were in the same room.

Exactly the same thing happened to my official apple charger

Left a burnt triangle on the socket. Trying to explain "yea my charger blew uo" to the American on the phone was a difficult task and then they still can't have understood properly because they only sent me the triangle bit even though I told them the USB lead was charred too

I'm positive it came with the phone, but how to check?

Over reaction, get new charger carry on as normal. Probably just a capacitor.

The only capacitor on it looks to be good still. It certainly hasn't blown out from the end or the sides.

What you going to ro, pull the moan breaker every night and every time you leave the house in case another electronic device fails.

I assume it'll be alright charging it with a Nexus 7 charger for now?

Just to update this, I believe the charger that blew up is a very good fake. We have two Samsung chargers in this house, both the same style but -

One charger has a slightly longer lead, and the plug end weighs 9g more than my new firework friend. I think my lovely other half purchased another charger from somewhere and neglected to tell me anything other than she'd purchased a new Samsung charger.

Probably from one of those high street dealers you see tucked into the side of an existing shop. My other half recently purchased the strangest oblong looking charger for her iPhone and was then blaming her phone for being slow to charge. I grabbed the newish charger and went to the dealer and demanded her money back - all £2.30 of it.

Never had a charger blow up on me as I stick to genuine ones always but that oblong pos would have no doubt blown in due time.

I have a great link that shows the insides of both Apple and Samsung genuine and fake chargers, sadly its on my home PC and I'm at work.

The link below though should make for some interesting reading on iPad chargers.

If you compare "samsung" they look different and I think the little QR code is also different. Maybe a different shade of grey. Can't remember but we bought ours from Amazon NOT the marketplace and still got fakes

I'd very much like to see the link if you have chance when you're home please :)

I also had a fake charger go pop many years ago. Took out power to half the office, I wasn't popular, many lost documents and someone's attempt to make toast in the kitchen failed.

Must have been scary at 5am
