Hey, so today I decided to download realtemp for the first time in a long time and noticed that my cpu is running at around 55c idle and 95c when playing CSGO so that can't be good, right? :p

I have no idea how long its been running like this and if it hurts performance at all? Anyway I was wondering what would be the best solution? A new CPU cooler, better thermal paste and reapply it or a new cpu?

my CPU cooler is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler

Its been so long since I built my PC and was monitoring all my temps but I remember it being pretty okay when I first built it in 2011.

Are you certain that the fan is spinning when the computer is on? The fan could be faulty. Could also be clogged with dust like Terminal_Boy said.

Also, if you've never checked the temps before, maybe it's just a bad mount? Might be worth re-applying the thermal paste and rehousing the heat-sync. :)

I did it a bit earlier last year, I need to get some compressed air to make it easier though.

I'll give cleaning it another go and I have checked the CPU temps just not in a long time, I'll try reapplying the thermal paste and rehousing it next.
 
Check all the black plastic framework on those coolers,they have a tendancy to crack over time resulting in less pressure and higher CPU temps
 
Gave it a good clean down today with compressed air and got rid of a lot of dust but it doesn't seem to be that much better. Idle its now sitting around 45c but when playing games its still going to crazy numbers like 98c constantly.

I couldn't notice any cracks on the cpu cooler but maybe thats just me.

I guess I'll either buy some thermal paste and try rehousing it or just buy a new CPU cooler.
 
Apply new paste, as has already been mentioned and see how the temps go. You could also try swapping out the fan on the cooler.
What case are you using and what fans are installed?
High temps can also be caused by bad or insufficient air circulation.
 
Thought I would let you all know that I replaced the cpu fan today and went from 98c in game to 55c so thats a lot better.
