My pc is getting old and acts irratically sometimes. Occasionally it won't turn on, I think i might be the motherboard tripping off the power supply.

My current specs are in my sig.

The graphics cards definitely need upgrading, and I would buy a new case and motherboard.

Or should I save the processor, ram and memory towards a htpc and build from scratch?

Sorry what PSU do you have? The CPU is capable enough so I'd just be looking at a GPU upgrade and a replacement power supply if it's at fault.

Thanks, could the cpu run say a single 290 or 970 without bottlenecks?

I have a 1440p monitor but I don't want to double up on gpu's this time as I found it all a pita.

I'm not sure if the problem is with the motherboard or the psu.

650w psu is a bit low for xfired 6970s....850w (70A+on 12v rail) really needed for those cards

PSU could have degraded a bity and thats causing present problems.

New cards wont need any more power though.

Single 970 would be a nice upgrade....2 even better of course :)

Been tempted myself but resisting for now.

Some of those old Corsair units did not age well. I've had a few units go on me in the past.

I suggest a new power supply and meaty GPU to start with. Install these then see what it performs like. Something like the below would be a good start. GTX 980 chosen over the GTX 970 due to the resolution you'll be playing at

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £439.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova G1 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply (120-G1-0650-XR) £69.95
Total : £519.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I agree, I would personally put an 850 in there as its not a lot more outlay and much better future proofing. I recently replaced my TX850 as it was screaming under load (2x680s but CPU only at 4GHz at the time.) I was gonna replace it with a EVGA 1000w but it was hardly much more to go up to the 1300w.

I will never need that much power but as it ages it still shouldn't ever struggle to power my system, until the day it dies. No more sound and the TX850 was only a year or so old, I'll use it in a smaller build.

Thanks,

I had the 850 in there before, but something blew and I assumed it was the PSU, and replaced it with the 650 - at least I think it is the 650, will check tonight.

Good recommendations, I think I'll upgrade my case to the Corsair graphite 780 T while I'm at it :)
