Cheap laptop for student, decent quality

Hi

I'm after a laptop that's going to last a good 7 years through college and university (I quit work and am going back into education).

I've been considering a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro for the build quality, but they're a bit pricey - I need to save all the money I can now so I have enough to see me through this.

Something with an SSD would be good, or at least something I can put an SSD in to.

Any suggestions? Is there anything out there for cheap, or should I realistically be looking to spend a bit more on something like a MBP to make sure it lasts the duration? I don't want to go cheap now just to have to replace it in a few years.

Thanks.

For build quality, portability and durability there isn't much as good as a MBA in my opinion. You can get them with an Education discount from the Apple store with free 3 year AppleCare. It's a lot to shell out now (maybe £550 for last years model from the Apple Edu store), but it's better than buying twice!

lenovo thinkpad. built like a rock.

+1 - tried one of those, it's really quite nice!

Anyway, *most* new laptops from reputable manufacturers are built quite well. I don't think a Macbook is necessarily the "only" choice.

The T440 looks good and also has a separate SSD NGFF slot which is nice (could stick a 128GB in there as the boot drive).

Are the T440s easily upgradable in terms of RAM & HDD/SSD?

Edit:
Decent price as well, although as soon as I stick the i5 4210U on which should be £79 it actually sticks £220 on the price! Hmmm. Anyone else have the same problem? http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t440/#tab-customize

Thanks.

i can't say about the latest models, but my t500 (7.5 years old i know!) is easily upgradable in terms of 2.5"hdd/ssd and ram.
