Hello all,

I just wanted to describe my problem with you folk and see the response really. Have I missed something obvious on how BT contracts work for Broadband, or am I being ripped off.

Been with BT since 2009 and have just BT Broadband Unlimited (no fibre) and landline.

I never bothered to phone up about my bill, or investigate new deals until March 2013. At that time I said I know I'm paying too much, I've been out of contract for a while, I just want you to give me the package that I've seen online. At that point it was no problem, out of contract, yes sir lets change that etc.

Less money was coming from my account, goodo.

Now I don't check my bills nor really worry about the amounts coming out of my account that are from expected companies, until that is 2 days ago! My BT broadband plus line rental is 51.99, more than what I was paying in 2009 for exactly the same service.

I phoned today and it turns out (after 2 calls, 40mins on first call - disconnected and this evening for 1.5hrs) that in March 2013 when I phoned up all they did was apply a discount which then became expired at the beginning of 2014. This put the bill backup to what I originally was paying in 2009, except for the increased line rental costs etc.

The lady at BT seemed to think this was fine??!

Im basically saying they have made a mistake, i.e. the agent at the time did not perform the correct change, as I should have not been given a discount, but simply contracted to pay less for the same package.

Both people at BT think it is strange I'm paying more for the same service 5 years later, when broadband prices have done nothing really but fall...although line rental has increased, nothing of equal counter amount.

Im expected a Manager to call me back, I know that won't happen.

As an aside, looking at Plusnet, any opinions?

Its also worth adding, that I can only upgrade my package to a better package (+calls), which costs less that what I'm paying, I cannot sign up for the same package for less money at the moment, even though it says my contracted started on, and ends on are both blank.

Does the £51.99 include your calls? Have you got all the "options" (caller ID, etc) turned on? My broadband + line rental with BT works out about £28/month (excluding calls)!

Also, pay your line rental yearly in advance, it saves a fair chunk (works out around ~£11/month rather than ~£15).

no, no calls/caller id, i do have a voip phone that I've forgot to turn off, but I know about that. When I called them in March 2013, I started to pay just over 30 quid a month, which was in line with what they advertised on their site. But they clearly did this as a discount on the Broadband element of the package, which as expired. What with line rental increases, its back at 51.99.

That sounds pretty crafty if they only applied it as a discount. Guessing they didn't make you aware of this in writing or anything?

Plusnet are owned by BT but operate seperately. I hear they're very good and I only went with BT because the cashback was slightly better otherwise it was going to be Plusnet.

I'd be tempted to join Plusnet as a new customer for £2.50/month + line rental (which you can pay upfront too bringing it down to about £11) then switch back to BT next year as a "new customer" making use of any new customer offers and cashback (£80.80 cashback via topcashback for BT right now for example). Then go back to Plusnet the year after as a new customer ;).

I might well do that. As it is taking some time for BT to accept their criminal activity, and while I look around, I've "renewed" on their 18 quid a month + line rental, as I cannot afford outages on my broadband really. But I have 14 days to cancel.

It is really crafty isn't it!

You've probably just signed up for 18mths so be careful with taking a new deal, just switch
