**** Sony Xperia Z3 ****

Really thinking to grab the Z3, Nexus 5 recently have developed far too many bugs/issue. Thinking to solider along and see if we get a Z4 at MWC, or I may cave and get one ASAP, any idea where its cheapest sim free.

Unless something miraculous happens, there will be a Z4 soon (tm). Sony know they are on to a good thing with the Z series but the worldwide marketing has been extremely hit or miss. Euro/Asia it does fine, Americas it tanked. As a product I think they have it nailed but the marketing / deals they do need a mega shake up, I'm praying they sort it this year.

While warranty repairs are never a good thing I thought I'd mention that I had to get repaired both a Z2 and Z3 under warranty in december and both had a first class experience. Neither were down to abuse, both were components that died. Repair was done within 1 working week and you're kept informed of when it arrives and when it ships out again (they use DPD). You get a letter about the work (both had mainboard replacements, I had new serials but outers were the same) and it comes in packaging that only a yodel driver could destroy. I go through a lot of repair systems each year and by a mile Sony were the best last year. Should you need to use them, at least from my experience, you'll be fine.

But on the flip side, the mainboard on 2 of your phones should never be dieing. :( Sounds like you had some real bad luck there.

No more Lollipop :P.

And I'm really thinking to get the Z3 now and just stick the Lollipop theme on it hmmm. Anyone have any experience with the seller on ebay that send them from Hong Kong or anywhere else to get it at sub £400.

My Z3 repair is finally done, got an email today saying it's on the way back!

Woop! Welcome back to the Z3 family :)
Am interested in how the Sony repair centre handled your phone.

You should definitely look into getting the phone as it's IMO the best all round phone you can get at present.

I'm not too sure about the Hong Kong sellers and how the warranty would work, I haven't seen it cheaper than £450 on Amazon but I might be wrong.

I got rid of the N5 which I had just bought of the bay as Lollipop was too buggy and it was getting on my nerves.

My Z3 had zero scuffs and marks on it so if it comes back with anything other than fingerprints I will not be pleased at all! The repair was delayed, they told me 5-7 days but as you guys confirmed, that's a lie and it took over 2 weeks.

I've been using a Moto G Gen2 since though and while the phone is great, it's no Z3 for sure so it will be nice to have it back

I can imagine if it's picked up a scratch or two you will not be amused...fingers crossed it comes back in the same pristine condition that you sent.

Did the repair centre outline what was wrong with the phone?

The Moto G 2nd Gen is a good phone, but it most certainly does not compare with the Z3!

I've just bought a Moto G 2nd Gen as a backup phone, am a little p-d off that I missed the deal when Amazon were selling it at a bargainous £117

Aye as a backup phone it's brilliant and is due UK Lollipop imminently from what I've read. I will definitely keep it updated for those times a backup phone is needed.

Regarding the repair, sadly Sony's repair portal is a bit rubbish. All it says is that it was received and is now on its way with tracking number. No specific details on what was replaced or what was found faulty. I imagine there may be an engineer's letter in the box with the phone stating what was done however so I will just wait for it to arrive and update then.

Yeah, Lollipop is beautiful but god damn is it buggy, and my Nexus 5 battery life is just starting to annoy me these days. I have a portable charger but just using it for a modern smartphone on days I haven't used it a huge amount is getting annoying.

Z3 is indeed very interesting, I'm slightly worried about the size as I'm at my limits with the Nexus 5 but I will just order it off Amazon and get it a few days and see if its ok with me.

Edit: Just had a look around, and it seems like unlocked the bootloader ruins the camera. I'm guessing there no way to root the device without unlocking the boot loader is there? Mostly just want to reinstall apps using TBP.

Defo keep the Moto G updated should you run into an emergency again, it's a bonus that it recognised your 128GB which is very handy :)

That's quite surprising you would think that a company like Sony would have a better repair portal. At least you get a tracking number which is better than nothing, I certainly hope that there's an engineers letter in box. I think there's also another update waiting for you to install if you haven't done so already - mine is on v23.01.A.5.77 which was installed a couple of weeks ago.

Keep us posted Mark with your thoughts.

It is buggy for sure and 4.4.4 is a god send compared to it, it may look beautiful, I like all the animations but things like the memory leak and Wifi bugs and the battery drain just take the shine off Lollipop. Although I've read somewhere that Google will be releasing 5.1 sometime in Feb which promises to fix all the major bugs that they are aware of.

Good move buying the Z3 from Amazon if you don't like it you can always send it back because of their excellent returns policy.

You do get used to the size eventually, as initially I thought it was a little too tall for me but I've got the hang of managing the Z3 and mostly use it with one hand.

As for unlocking the bootloader and it affecting the camera quality there's a mod on XDA that negates the issue.

Have a look on the link below:

Our Z3 will get Lollipop in February, confirmed on r/sonyxperia the other day. I believe we will get Android 5.0.2 which contains bug fixes and other stuff so at least we will be fully up to date

i used the above link to tell what was happening with my z3 while it was been repaired by "Sony". it had a couple of photos that they had taken of the damage and it said where about in the repair process it was. (it took me 3 weeks after they had the phone to discover the above link)

they had my phone for over 5 weeks to replace the screen.

they didn't use DPD to send mine back they used royal mail.

Thanks for that mate. Have you rooted/unlocked the bootloader. And Amazon has it for £475, might hold of too my next pay check as I just booked a holiday and brought my brother a watch for £430 xD.

5.0.2 is bug fixes for older device, and it doesn't include the memory leak which is the biggest issue. Its just getting annoying to have to restart your phone once a day or else my pocketcast will crash if I open any bigger app. The rest of the bugs are manageable. Hopefully it comes with 5.0.3/5.1.
