GALAX GeForce GTX 970 Infinity Black Edition coil whine :(

just a quick question I have a Crosair CX750M 80 plus bronze PSU running one of these and I'm hearing a loud intermittent whine on my desktop (have not tried any games yet as it's a new install), would I have a problem if this persists returning?

You can return it we will test it but on a decent PSU. The CX750M is a budget PSU unfortunately and could be the cause.

Send it back if it does not whine for us, then it is your PSU, if it does whine for us we shall replace it. :)

I've had more than a dozen graphics cards in my life, both AMD and Nvidia, stretching back about 15 years, maybe even 20. Not once have any of them had any amount of coil whine, not even the slightest of sound. This is no fault of OCUK or any other retailer, but I hate the stand of "all graphics cards have coil whine to a certain extent" Before the 9x series cards, you hardly ever heard of stories regarding said coil whine in these forums or discussions amongst friends. These 9x series cards just seem rife with it. At least Gibbo and OCUK will refund or replace, can't argue with that. I just really hate the defence of coil whine, it shouldn't be there, end of.

True but as I explained earlier, as cards get faster and faster, whine will become more of an issue. On previous generation cards 1300-1400MHz was the maximum kind of overclock you could expect.

Now the new cards are running at 1400MHz out of the box and overclock wise are hitting around 1500-1600MHz.

So as MHz increases whine could become more apparent on graphics cards, motherboards and power supplies.

Another example, when overclocking a CPU with massive bus speeds the mainboard can whine.

Just logged on to report the same problem with same card. Playing mafia 2 at the moment and its loud! CSGO though is fine. What shall I test with? I'm just downloading Far Cry 4 now so will test on that today. What do the shop test with?

Oh and got the card Monday when I heard the whine I "upgraded" my Bronze Seasonic to a Gold Super Flower. But this didnt solve it :( do like the new fully modular PSU though :D

this....970 is bad with it!

@Gibbo have you guys done any tests on 970's to see if small changes in the core / mem clocks affects noisy cards in any way ? If they are that closely linked to coil wine dropping / raising the clocks by a few Mhz could "fix" cards with this issue

Hopefully! A bit of coil whine I dnt mind but could hear this with headphones on from 3-4 feet away with PC fans at 800rpm. It sounds like a dolphin being abused :D

You'll have no problem with ocuk on this, from what I've read their returns stuff is absolutely stunning now.

Yup, Dealing with the RMA service I was more than happy with OCUK service. Quick turn around.

Therefore I wouldn't worry and get it sent over to them to resolve the issue.

Well thanks to this thread I got it sent back today Ixon I hope you get it sorted. Its a lot to spend for such an issue. I never thought coil whine would annoy me but Jesus it got on my ****. I think the fact it changes when you're looking around is what drags my attention to it. If it was a static whine I don't think it would bother me nearly as much.

Yup and this is exactly what I'm experiencing and I'm on my second card (waiting on an RMA number from CS to send it back). I've told Gibbo and Bailey this, they tested the first card that I sent back and even they agreed that the card was a whiner and the coil whine frequency could be heard over 6feet away. This second card is identical to the first, as in it also suffers from the same coil whine/buzzing/frequency changes. Currently waiting on an RMA to be issued, so that I can send this second card back.

You don't play WoW by any chance do you?

Hey Wizzfizz. No I don't play WoW. Is that what you're getting problems in?

Are you going for a 3rd attempt on the RMA? Sorry to hear you're having trouble as well. Must be very frustrating for you at this stage.

I'd be very interested to hear from someone that had whine on one and not on a replacement. Maybe others don't notice or maybe its just a few users have flocked here due to problems. Gibbo have you tested ones that have no whine?

Also if OCuK discover no whine on a unit sent back is it then possible to change to DSR? As I've already upgraded my PSU for no reason I don't think I can really change anything else my end.

Cheers guys

Alex

Yeah i'm getting huge coil whine frequency changes in WoW when I turn about, the card also buzzes rather loudly though my card, sounds like a bee hive. It happens in three other games.

I really don't know what to do, as with this card I fully expected it do delivery on what it promised, unfortunately that just isn't the case. I'm running a top spec PSU (Superflower 1000 Platinum) so it's definitely the card and well Gibbo was able to replicate the fault on his test rig anyway.

I guess if you got the RMA window you can sit tight and I'll update this thread. I'm kind of expecting the replacement to be no better now. :(

I sent mine back yesterday morning so it should arrive sometime this morning, now I'm kinda worried of getting another one that has the exact same problem & having to send it back again.

We guarantee if you have coil whine we will take it back and if it emits any even low we will swap it or refund it. :)

The coil whine reduction is that it helps reduce coil whine and in some cases eliminate it, but it's impossible to prevent coil whine in every possible case as it's an inherent feature in electronics.

The coil whine reduction just helps reduce the chances of you experiencing it, so send it back and we will test it and if any whine is present will replace or refund for you. :)

This is very good to know, thanks Gibbo, saving a few quid elsewhere is a false economy when it comes to OCUK support. I bought a card from a competitor quite few years ago to and it had horrible coil whine. I sent it back as faulty and it was returned as "no fault found". That's why I bought my 5.1 gaming headphones. :D

I hope the OP has luck with his next card. I have the Galax GTX980 and get no coil whine, so I would assume you were just unlucky.

Fingers crossed! Good luck. Be sure to post back the result!
