End game has started:

French police have surrounded a building in a northern town where two men suspected of the Charlie Hebdo massacre are said to have a hostage.

Shots were fired and several people are said to have been wounded as events unfolded in Dammartin-en-Goele, 35km (22 miles) from Paris.

Reports that French media sources say police have made contact with the two suspects, who are quoted as saying they are prepared "to die through martyrdom".

Do think your missing the bigger picture though. Why kill them on point. Would it not be worth more to keep them alive to interrogate. Clearly the attack was well thought out. There is good intelligence to be had here.

Completely different situation. We aren't at war with an organised mobilised army with (relatively) clear and tangible aims. We're "fighting" against small groups of individuals scattered across the world without any real coherent cause.

So I'll ask again, what would be classed as "winning" in this scenario?
 
Can we limit the amount of religion stuff here, I have to read through pages of stuff just to find out what is actually happening in France with the people that did this.

The security services will probably have turned their electronic lives upside down, I can't imagine they could or would offer much more if taken alive. More likely to use their public appearances to grandstand than help authorities.
