6 Series Engines & Options

I'm looking at buying a used 6 series. From February I'm anticipating that my annual mileage will be around 12-15k. Therefore I don't need a diesel, but there are so many more 640d's out there than 640i's I'm not sure if it's worth sacrificing the smoother petrol engine if I find a nice 640d in the spec I want. I haven't driven either back to back but I'm planning to this month at some point.

The next question is, I know these cars come well specced as standard, but what are the desirable options to have? There's so many options on these I'm sure I can live without most of them, but I'd like one that has all the media options ticked as well as heated seats. I'm not bothered about having CIC or NBT iDrive so I'm considering pre March 2013 cars.

The influx capacitor addon is worth considering as well, I believe that it allows you to arrive before you set off.

Professional Navigation, extended leather and Xenon's are standard fit on the 6 Series so it has the essentials you'd want as standard. So options wise it's merely personal preference and there are no unmissable essentials IMHO. You'll be lucky to find a car devoid of a few extra options anyway.

640d outnumber 640i by such an extreme margin even if you wanted the petrol one it is sadly unlikely you would even find one.

Unfortunately my current car has these already so I'll be making sure these are in the new one; well all except the flux capacitor.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Slightly surprised it comes with extended leather as standard as that's the sort of option BMW love charging for.

Shame about the 640i, there are a few knocking about. I think I'd want an M Sport over an SE.

Wish they would drop diesel, it literally ruins a city centre with its nasty smog, especially if its one of the older engines.

It's a 5 Series Coupe that costs 20 grand more than a 5 Series, they are charging for it

I really liked the head up display that bmw do now, the new shape 6 series is a very very nice car.

I've been considering a 5 Series too, but would want either a 535d or a 535i. The 535d's are quite pricey still.

I tested the 640D and 640D GS and both were exceptional cars. Ive said it before but I think BMW's diesel engine suit the car really well and it is in the main very undiesel in how it does what it does.

I've had a 2014 640d M-S as a rental for about 10 days...

I was surprised at how good that diesel engine is, bmw are good at making the least diesel-y diesels around.

I would still prefer the petrol version, sure... just worth noting that the diesel engines do very well for themselves... and I usually dislike driving a diesel.

Nice cars... although I'd rather have a well specced V8 M3 for the same money

Didn't you used to have a V8 M3?

I wouldn't mind another E9x M3 but I'm favouring more towards interior spec and comfortability rather than speed now, and the E9x build quality is pretty poor in comparison.

I assume you've considered Jags in that price bracket?

Might tick those boxes you're looking for & it's easier to find a decent petrol.

There are no credible Jags in this price bracket which are equivalent to the 6 Series.

The XK is absolutely ancient and not a patch on the 6 Series.

I quite liked the 2011 XKR-S... the interior was above BMW finish... closer to Aston territory... was comparing it to a V8 Vantage.

Heck of a step up from the finish of the older Jag models...

Not certain how that compares to the lower spec models.

The BMW seats are good, but I find the Jag seats more comfortable.

The Jag nav system is horrible however, idrive is leagues ahead.

I'd happily compare 6 series to XK...
