Has anyone gone x99 ?

I run SLI Titan Black on PCIE2 and I see no difference when compared to other rigs running the same on PCIE3.

It's really, truly, not something to worry about. If you were going three way or quad? then sure, I would at least think about it.

X58 spec is almost as good as my X79. It's only really missing SATA 3 and PCIE3. But, my Titan Blacks won't allow the PCIE3 hack to work any way so I'm stuck on 2.

And common sense is yet restored again.

Long live X58!

:D

Over the years I have , not lost interest in the latest tech....but I have got more sensible with upgrades etc...CPU tech hasn't moved on much IMO since the massive jump that was Conroe from previous available tech available at the time...

I'm running a sata 3 SSD on a sata 2 port and I'm losing no sleep...they destroy the raptors for an OS drive.... When raptors were the only thing available at the time....would I get a faster boot in windows moving it to a sata 3 ? The answer is yes but it would be negible.

Usb 3 ....don't really need it....
A lot of the tech is of course faster but not life changing....a lot of it is marketing...and go faster stripes and numbers....

When my gtx 970 runs the same in a pcie 2 socket has it does in a pcie 3 socket you have to have a serious chat with yourself ( well myself :p)and think maybe money could be spent on areas that are life changing like a 1440p 144hz monitor and the like.

All my multimedia and photos are store on the server that I acess over gigabit Lan... My setup is quite sweet and certainly on par with the lastest and greatest costing three times as much.

EDIT: I have done water and phase change and overclocked the ass of hardware for years....I'm glad I'm sensible enough to jump of the must have the latest merry go round lolAs long as I'm not uber behind I'm fine with it if I'm honest....latest tech can be scratched with gfx cards....and the 970 proved to be great at just that....

Dude don't forget about SSD RAID.

I'm running four Corsair Nova 2 (so SATA 2) SSDs in my big purple rig and I easily get 1gb per sec on both read and write. IIRC it's not a SATA 3 RAID either !

Then there's my Hackintosh, which has 3 32gb Intel Enterprise SSDs in again SATA II and I get this...

They cost me £10 each, so £30 for 96gb RAID.

Honestly, stick to X58 and spend your money elsewhere. The Xeon is more than a good enough foundation for any modern rig and there are ways around the SATA issue.

Well said could not agree more mate.

Some of these peeps with X99 do need a reality check for the minimal gains they are getting. It's just not like the old days unfortunately when you used to get decent upgrades that you noticed in the real world.

Does make me laugh a bit!

I personally wouldn't risk sli 970 with x58 on 650w psu. Yes 970's are low power compared to my 780 setup, haswell consumes a lot less power. Id feel more comfy with 850w Ono.

I can remember when we had the same spec, now i went x99 haha:D

Even though I have gone X99, and had X58 previously - I must admit that what you say is common sense. In all honesty X99 is not worth it, certainly as far as value/performance ratio. Having said all that, the machine I have now will have to last me many years if I am going to get any value from it. I think the system you have is sweet, and obviously does everything you need it too, so why throw mega money at it when not necessary.

Agreed....:)

I'm still on X58 and whilst I'm contemplating upgrading to X99 it seems like a lot of expense for not much gain! I've had my current system for 5 years and the only thing I've done to it in that time is to add some more memory (6GB >> 18GB) a year after getting it and replacing the original faulty Geforce 470 with a Geforce 770. That was actually a pretty worthwhile upgrade since it pretty much doubled my framerate in most games.

I had plans to buy an entire new system but since replacing the graphics card there's nothing my PC can't run at high detail at 1080p. The only thing I really need to upgrade in the coming months is to replace my 80Gb Intel SSD with a larger capacity one in preparation for Windows 10 being released.

It's a really odd feeling. I've had my system for 5 years and feel like I should be replacing it but even a brand new X99 system will only be around twice as fast which isn't a massive jump and probably wont even be noticeable in day to day use other than CPU intensive tasks. If I was being totally pragmatic I could probably get a few more years out of my system by buying a larger SSD, upgrading the stock CPU cooling fan and overclocking it and/or swapping the CPU out for a hex core Xeon.

I've decided to treat myself to a new 34" Dell U3415w Ultrawide 1440p monitor in lieu of any system updates at the moment so I'll see how I feel after getting that up and running!

Upgrading to X99 is worth it for some that are moving from pre icore generations, depending on personal budget of course. Being on 775 myself, invested in some X99 parts already with 5930k cpu and GB mobo, ram to get next ;)

I have just finished building my 5960X Haswell-E, Asus Rampage V Extreme and
G Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-3000C15Q-16GRR 16GB Memory water cooled system.

I haven't got around to overclocking it yet thought right now I have it on turbo
mode in the bios which gives me 4Ghz speeds.

For the moment I have it cooled with a XSPC RayStorm D5 Photon AX360
WaterCooling Kit which does a really good job of cooling only the CPU.

I did originally buy a XSPC RX360 V3 Triple Radiator kit for the setup but
unfortunately I had too much trouble trying to get this Radiator to fit in
my Cooler Master Cosmos 2 case because of it being a bit too thick.

I am now just waiting on the new Nvidia graphic cards coming out
around the middle of this year before upgrading my graphic card
to complete my system.

I am very pleased so far with the setup.

what if your current x58 is screwed and looking to build a pc?

now a x99 wont be such a daft move if funds permitted?

Got a 5930k with 32GB ram and Three Titan Blacks. As tipes says, it's going to have to last me a good old while for it to be worth the outlay.
