Shooting at French Satirical Magazine

Let me ask you something.

If you knew that this would happen. Would you still put the paper to print?

Congrats to Google for helping Charlie run a multi-million copy print. I'm seeing quite a few otherwise reasonable people claim that Charlie provoked the terrorists. Let's be clear. A cartoon never provokes murder. No more than a skirt provokes rape. And if you need evidence, then remember the hostages they killed in the ensuing manhunt. If the image of Muhammed offends you, then look away.

It wasn't just a cartoon, Charlie has repeatedly pocked the hornets nest including having the prophet Mohamed as guest editor they have courted controversy and used the backlash from the Muslim world to promote their magazine, lets not pretend they were ever making an articulate political point or striking a blow for freedom of the presses. They always risked pushing some of the more radical types over the edge hence the editors police bodyguard and they finally tipped the scales.

Let's be straight I'm not saying that they deserved to be killed or that gunning people down is acceptable protest but people should be aware that freedom of speech should be used responsibly and that if you play with fire eventually you will get burned.

People need to go read the magazine, or at least reasearch it. It poked fun and all religion, politics and capitalism.

That magazine tries to do more for the minorities than most others. It was against discrimination and the like. It was fighting for the Muslims and the Jews and their place in Frances society. An equal society.

People have come across recent events, seen a cartoon, magazine, bloodshed and come to the conclusion all this magazine did was poke fun at the Muslims all day long...

NO EXCUSE TO KILL

You have no understanding of the history of french satirical comment dating back to the founding of the Republic. Hebdo poked fun at all institutions. Its just the extremist muslims that shot the place up. Dont go excusing their behaviour.

What troubles me with your statement is the fact that Extremist nut jobs have such a diametrically opposed set of 'rules' by which they live and a desire to kill everyone not living by their own rules, that every single westerner indulging in all the things they hold as 'bad' are inviting terrorism..

What you are saying is, we shouldn't dare do anything too public that is against extremist ideals because if we do we may die?? Sounds exactly what terrorists want to me..

The last bit was because I could see people replying; 'but we do kill them and blow them up, look at Iraq/ Iran, etc.'

Yes we kill them and blow them up. Not because we don't agree with their laws though.

So would it be ok for them to kill us for the same reasons we kill them ?

Goes both ways.

Western world doesn't agree with apostasy or the punishments associated with it. (Flogging, stoning to death, etc.)

Western world doesn't agree with forcing women to cover up...

We don't go round blowing up and killing them because we don't agree with these laws.

If someone brings up us invading irag/iran/ afghan please think before you post.

Well exactly. I would say in general we have a relatively hands off approach to such blatant human rights abuses, which contrasts most severely with the extremist approach to magazine editing. All because of a few drawings that they found irksome.

.........................................................to you too

The "swedes" depicted a picture of a slightly raving Mohammed with a bomb on his head... It was meant to antagonise. While I'm sure this will get some reaction it won't get anywhere near the reaction the one you mentioned did, especially as the majority of european Muslims wont condone the violence that happened.

I had a look at lunch today for this
Swedish cartoon artist Lars Vilks, who became the target of an alleged international murder plot for his 2007 cartoons of Mohammed as a dog, again angered Muslims Tuesday by showing an Iranian film that depicts the Prophet entering a gay bar.

Not sure about the bomb on his head? Just the one about the dog (presumably the same? as I've never seen that image.)

From the cartoon posted, where does it clearly state that is the prophet Mohammed?

Just an assumption really.

It was mentioned by the reporter from the BBC this morning. Who read the magazine (or his researcher did)
