Das Experiment - think most of the others I would recommend have already been noted. Also another one is Irreversible - one of the most powerful films you can see but truly horrifc too - not for everyone.

Adding "Come and see" to the the list. Russian WW2 film. My brother pinched the DVD on me and I've yet to have it back. That was a couple years ago.

Come and See (Russian: Иди и смотри, Idi i smotri; Belarusian: Ідзі і глядзі, Idzi i hlyadzi) is a 1985 Soviet war drama-psychological thriller film directed by Elem Klimov about and occurring during the Nazi German occupation of the Byelorussian SSR.
Also,

The film was shot in chronological order over a period of nine months. Aleksey Kravchenko says that he underwent "the most debilitating fatigue and hunger. I kept a most severe diet, and after the filming was over I returned to school not only thin, but grey-haired."[7] The 2006 UK DVD sleeve states that the guns in the film were often loaded with live ammunition as opposed to blanks, for realism. Aleksey Kravchenko mentions in interviews that bullets sometimes passed just 4 inches (10 centimeters) above his head (such as in the cow scene).
I don't know how true the last bit is, but it wouldn't surprise me. There's a forest attack scene and I remember watching it for the first time thinking "holy **** these special effects are amazing" only to later read the DVD cover and say to myself "well, that explains it".

  • Rec - Spanish zombie movie, not actually much zombie in it, very good though.
  • Pan's Labyrinth - Spanish/Mexican fantasy movie about a girl in (just after?) the Spanish civil war
  • Taare Zameen Par - Indian drama about a teacher going above and beyond to help a kid with leearning difficulties

Taare Zameen Par I especially liked, very well written.
