Help wih Radeon R9 290

Hi guys ( and gals )
An awesome guy I know who works for overclockers sold me a Radeon R9 290
But I'm having a shed load of problems with it.

Installed fine but if I try to play anything I get a red ( RED?!?!) screen of death.

Seems to happen randomly when I'm on the web too.

Windows says I have an oxa0000001 error

have reinstalled new drivers, seems to be more stable but everything running very slow as if no graphics card at all.

running a fresh install of windows 8.1 64 bit. Power coming from a Corsair CX500M

I've heard these cards can be glitchy, anyone got any advice ? thanks in advance.

CPU isn't overclocked.
It's an Intel Quad core Q8300 2.50 GHZ
It's old, but how would that be the issue ?

Black screen generally is a faulty GPU and red screen is normally a CPU issue.

As your CPU is at stock the issue is your power supply.

Is you motherboard BIOS updated ?

Did you have an nvidia card before ? Even if you didn't, try removing any GPU drivers completely with specific applications.

Is the card overclocked ? Have you tried running everything on stock ?

Hi. Have replaced power supply with CX750M Still having issues, all games loading but lagging like I've got a really ****** card or even no card at all ( mouse is hardly controllable on menus ) . Not sure how to remove old drivers any advice ?

I had a lot of issues with my R9 290 kepts crashing when just browsing the net etc. And i managed to pin down the issue to be my motherboard/processor as is was quite an old thing running an AMD Phenom 955 BE so see if you can try it with another motherboard to see if the issue still remains.

It may well be the mobo as people have said, often BIOSs need to be updated before they like newer GPUs but being socket 775 a BIOS update may have not been released for a while

Defo need an updated bios. As said above red screen is normally cpu/mobo fault
