Hi

Dad needs to upgrade some of his components on his gaming machine. Budget is around 400-500.
He needs to upgrade.

CPU
Mobo
RAM
Cooler possibly if needed
And a case if doable with budget.

Thanks

Current specs are very old from memory I think it's an atom duel core? And a 660ti.
Unsure on rest to be honest it'd about 10 years old anything is an upgrade.
Currently playing graw, sniper ghost warrior. Probably play battlefield/cod on new machine cannot currently play on current spec.

Okay cool, so the GPU is decent enough

What PSU does he have?

YOUR BASKET

1 x Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm £19.99

That includes a new PSU and a nice cooler so you could overclock , and an SSD (the Teamgroup RAM is on today only offer though!)

I assume he doesn't have an SSD? You could fit a 256GB one in too. If no SSD needed, that's about £450 and if no PSU then that's £400

256GB SSD

PSU isn't needed recently changed so plenty of power there.
If in budget then SSD I'd make him buy such an improvement.
Probably wouldn't overclock but best to have the cooler there anyway.

Sounds perfect to me.

Yeah, definitely get the ssd. Boot times are so much quicker and so are load times. Does he run a 64bit OS to use the 8GB memory well?

The SK hynix ssds in the specs are good bang for buck, so you could look at those. Or the crucial mx100 series. The 840 evo are also great, but a bit on the expensive side and you wouldn't really notice the speed increase over one of the cheaper options anyway excwpt for in benchmarks

Just realised he has a 6870 GPU would that need upgrading?

Yeah ideally you'd want to upgrade that, it's not massively powerful these days for current games

e.g.

Which does have a locked i5, but as you said you won't be overclocking. No CPU cooler, but the intel one is okay (£15 can get you a Raijintek Aidos). Also, the Z97 board will allow for upgrades in the future to an i7 perhaps, something you can't really do with the AM3+ socket from AMD so I'd take 1150 any day as investing into a dead socket is pretty mad imo, though it is still great value for money so is a decent option
