Oxford University Press bans use of pig, sausage or pork-related words to avoid offending Muslims

How can anyone be offended by bacon apart for a vegetarian lol. Utter nonsense, just scared of being Allah bombed no doubt.

So you mean to say an ideology was evil all by itself?

I'm saying an ideology can be seen as being 'evil' and a lot of the blame for the resulting actions of people following that ideology can be put on the ideology itself

The people who went along with it were responsible for what happened. You can't really argue against it. What you can argue against is WHY they did what they did outside of it being an ideology.

You can "lol" at things all you want, it doesn't really change anything about the fact that people do bad things because they're people and it's unfortunately a trait of humans.

sure, on one level... but that doesn't remove the blame from ideologies, which in turn are created by people

it would certainly be simplistic to just decide that people are sometimes evil and that is it... plenty of would be terrorists believe themselves to be good decent people doing god's work. They contrast completely with say a serial killer who knows full well he is doing 'evil' things and doesn't care. Within the framework of an ideology - say extremist Islam an Islamist can actually rationalise killing infidels or even other muslims who he has decided have become infidels.. I mean if you're a meat eater you're not necessarily going to give much thought to the life of a chicken in the kebab you eat when drunk. Likewise if someone genuinely believes that some other people are less than human and there is some magical creator who wants them dead etc.. then they don't have to be inherently 'evil' to kill, they just have to believe in that ideology. Likewise the Nazis dehumanized Jews... It isn't like large portions of the German population were naturally evil *******s, there was also a very poisonous ideology at play.

See I love this - when it comes to great feats of science and cultural it's Islamic when it comes to cutting young girls it's cultural.

FGM came way before islam in most places I think you'll find. It predates the birth of Islam by hundreds of years, let alone the time it took islam to spread to many of the countries that practice FGM today.

To say FGM has anything to do with Islam is completely false.

EDIT: Another link on the subject.

FGM varies from country to country, tribes, religion, and from one state and cultural setting to another, and no continent in the world has been exempted.[3] In most parts of Nigeria, it is carried out at a very young age (minors) and there is no possibility of the individual's consent.[6] Type I and Type II are more widespread and less harmful compared to Type III and Type IV. In Nigeria, there is greater prevalence of Type I excision in the south, with extreme forms of FGM prevalent in the North. Practice of FGM has no relationship with religion. Muslims and Christians practice it, but it is more widely spread in Christian predominated parts of Nigeria.

EDIT 2: Just saw your later posts. :) Makes more sense now, I did find it a bit off you appeared to get that wrong.

Can't we just rename pork to avoid all this?

Call it "Lisport" or something. Rename bacon to "Erydaifud".

Job done.

in theory yes

unfortunately it is now associated - NGOs trying to work to prevent the practice now get shut down in debates at the UN by Muslim countries over sensitivities relating to discussions about Sharia law... now that it is associated with Islam then criticism of it can become associated with criticism of Islam - something, which as we've seen rather recently, plenty of people are very keen to shut down

After more discussion, a recess, and another warning from the representative from Egypt, Littman was finally allowed to proceed. After noting that “almost 90% of the female population in the north of Sudan undergo FGM which, in many cases, is practiced in its most extreme form known as infibulation,” Littman declared: “We believe that only a fatwa from Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Sayyed Tantawi – replacing the ambiguous fatwas of 1949, 1951 and 1981 – will change this barbaric, criminal practice, which is now growing even in Europe.”

At this point Egypt interrupted, complaining that “this is an attempt to raise a bad traditional practice to Islam. Sheikh Al-Azhar [Sayyed Tantawi] is the president of the largest and the biggest and the oldest Islamic university in the world.” He exclaimed: “My point is that Islam will not be crucified in this Council. That’s why we are challenging this ruling” – that is, Costea’s decision to allow Littman to deliver his address.

they don't even want the NGOs to speak on the matter any more.... yet they raise the fairly simply point that just issuing a fatwa could help resolve the issue

In sum, then, what Littman was saying was accurate, and the Egyptian, Pakistani and Iranian representatives consistently characterized these truthful statements as insults to Islam, and moved to have them suppressed. Not only does this shameful episode bode ill for the human rights of women in the Islamic world; it also represents another victory in the war against free speech that Islamic supremacists have been pursuing with particular energy lately, calling on Western authorities to prosecute Dutch politician Geert Wilders for his film Fitna and Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard for his drawing of Muhammad with a bomb in his turban, and in general to outlaw what they perceive as insults to Islam.

I'm not racist but I feel really judgemental to religious folk nowadays.

With todays knowledge out there and easily accessible. I find them close minded and ignorant.

There is definitely a feeling of separation out there

Why the hate on pigs :( Pigs are clever and good at video games :p

Pigs have long been considered to be smarter than dogs. Ironically, it is also one of the cleanest animals around. A pig will refuse to defecate anywhere near the area where he lives and eats when he is given a choice. You can train a pig just like a dog or cat, but what makes their intelligence remarkable is the complex social lives that behaviorists once believed to be the purview of primates. Mother pigs have been found to sing to their piglets while they are nursing. They excel at video games that would be hard for a young child, and sometimes better than the primates.

Also, like primates and other smart animals, they learn from watching one another, often working to outsmart each other. One pig will often follow another pig to food before grabbing it away from him, and the pig who was tricked will change behaviors to reduce how many times it is tricked.

I'd like to see their Arabic Friendly nursery rhyme book...

"Old Muhammad had a farm, halal-halal-meat,
And on that farm he had no pigs, haram-haram-meat.
With a quick prayer here and a quick prayer there,
Here a prayer, there a prayer, and his final fifth prayer"

I actually sang it out just to make sure the lyric fits...
You sir have just made my colleagues think I'm the office closet racist.

RASCIST! :p If that was Sky News they'd have to remove that instantly from their news feed and apologise profusely for possibly offending... no-one.
