How is AMD mobo/chipset performance these days?

Been out of the game for a few years how are things looking for AMD chipsets?

Specifically things like sata/usb performance in comparison to intel. Anything new coming out from either AMD or Intel worth looking at? I'm considering a system upgrade once DDR4 is commonplace, summer maybe. Cost isn't to much of a concern but I generally don't go ultra high end.

There hasn't been anything new since Piledriver in 2012, which itself performed around the Phenom II level on per core performance. They are however working on a new architecture called Zen with hopes that it will be able to compete with Intel again but it's not expected until 2016.

So if money's not really a limit then I would say go with Intel, the Haswell i5s will perform significantly better than your 940.

As for SATA/USB performance it's pretty much the same between the two, providing it's the Intel/AMD chipset controlling the ports and not a 3rd party one.

Cheers, I'm in no dia rush.. maybe I could wait another year just to see what they turn out. Regarding the sata/usb speeds AMD were quite a bit down with their performance last I checked, which was of course years ago. I'm guessing AMD haven't said much about the zen chip at this point?

Sadly not much information but I do suspect it will be launched along side K12, AMD's ARM CPU, and possibly on 14nm using FinFET technology (which Intel's trigate technology is pretty similar to).
