Are my motherboard temps real or caused by GPU?

Hi.

Having trouble deciding whether it's best to run my gpu fans faster or even move my case (really don't want to do this).

If I leave my gpu fan profile at auto then my mobo temps get pretty high (around 64c) but if I run the fan at full speed and/or move my case to a better ventilated area then they drop quite a bit.

My case is very small so I'm hoping it's just GPU air on the sensor but I'd rather not risk it.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

I have to have my 470,s set to 70 fan speed when I'm gaming crysis 1 and 2 hit 98 when playing. When the cards hit over a 105 the fan ramps up to cool it.

Are you sure its not the CPU temps you are referring to ? The case temperature which is also what the motherboard reports as well as CPU temp if it gets to 64c then you have BIG problems.

That would mean the air circulating in your case is 64c. I think you are confused with CPU temps that the motherboard is reporting.

If it was that hot you shouldnt be able to put your hand in your case!

Has your case got good airflow? I thought the 970,s were good with temps.

No, the SG05 is a small itx case and I run a corsair quiet fan.

It's absolutely fine when just using the cpu though.

The 970 gets quite hot but stays under 80c and doesn't throttle so I don't care.

Yes it's definitely the motherboard temp sensor that I mean. Cpu temps are mid/high 70s when encoding.

Either the air in my case is actually 64c or the GPU is dumping heat onto the mobo sensor.

I'm keen to find out for certain.

Maybe I need a thermometer with a probe.

All seems a little toastie, you gpus hitting over 100 and your mobo hitting 60s. I think you gonna have to get some better airflow in there.

I've seen my motherboard temps reach 55c after gaming for a few hours (Asrock Z97 Extreme4). I have fairly good case cooling and my GTX 780 cards use blower coolers that exhaust hot air out the back of the case (although one recently died on me :().

One thing that doesn't help is the design of some GPU coolers. The Gigabyte Windforce coolers for example blow hot air directly on to the motherboard and the PCH heatsink. The Windforce heatsink fins are positioned so that hot air gets exhausted along the top and bottom edges of the card.
