I have got the 980 HOF and I am now on my second card which has really bad coil whine as well which I have got to send back again to try for a third time to see if I am any more lucky with the GALAX/Kfa2 card....The coil whine on my second card is not as bad as the first but I can still hear it under any type of load from a few feet away and that's over 6 fans and the three fans on the card it's self.
I am not sure if anyone else has been getting these problems with the 980 HOF card as from what I know not many people have this card or know much about them...However I emailed GALAX them selves and they informed me that a bad batch of cards have gone out which they know about which really sucks as it seems OCUK have got this batch all I can do is keep my fingers crossed that the third one is a lucky one or the fourth or the 5 who knows I wont rest till I get one that does not whine under load just playing games stubborn I know but at that price range you know

Rant over but so far thumbs up to OCUK for dealing with the returns on the first and the second card now never let me down with RMA stuff hope it just stays that way till I get that coil whine free 980 monster

there's a big thread about the whine on the 970 infinity black edition too, I think nVidia has really screwed up this gen as all these cards seem to be affected, 970's and 980's! Just hope that the next gen are better built with higher quality components

Ye I am following the 970 post as well I am not a happy Nvidia user this year my 680 was fine 580 fine but 980? haha noooo not fine how it is allowed I don't know

While I sypathise with anyone who gets a card with coil whine, I think it's the luck of the draw and there is no such thing as "Nvidia dropping the ball". Every single gen you get people complaining about coil whine and it doesn't matter if it's Nvidia or AMD, there will always be people affected. It's classic confirmation bias at play. Someone is unfortunate to get a card with coil whine and goes off the forums and reads some other threads where people have coil whine with same/similar cards. Jumps to conclusion that it's a rampant problem.

I have a Galax GTX980 reference and it has zero coil whine. It really is the luck of the draw.

well there's the answer... i'm also on my 3rd...but i don't want the 3rd..iv asked for a refund... first card had fan problems... but this second card has the same fan problems plus some coil whine and the biggest part constant display lose.... really bad card.. going back this Monday!

heads wreaked with these HOF'S love the look of them but this bad batch has killed it for me... the hole 9xx series has been bad tbh... four cards iv had with problems...two 970's with bad whine now 980's with other crap... ill stay clear for now though... not worth the hassle imho!:confused::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Ye I have read this problem on the GALAX 970 coil whine thread I am feeling your pain I am gonna give the third card on last shot when I send it back sometime this week coming up and just haver my fingers crossed I know this is not an OCUK problem this is the board vender problem and I have an email proving that GALAX them selves know a bad batch has gone out so it's a waiting game really

You might be right as there aren't any reliable statistics on the proportion of bad cards BUT I've never heard a card get anything like as many complaints as the 970 is getting. Of course, the 970 is extremely popular but the number of issues still seem surprisingly high. The 980 doesn't seem to be as badly affected although that may be down to the smaller number of sales.

Agreed I hear a lot about the 980 cards as well not just 970

the bad part for me is having to fork out money every time i send it back (36 euro each time) not good Galax errr... will be 72 euro come Monday... somewhere around 55 pounds... so imagine what it would cost me if it went 4,5,6 cards...no way!!! to much! should have free returns tbh..like competitors! not impressed at all! :(

Wow really? :O I am shocked that you have to pay to send the card back I have not had to so far as I am from the UK and I will be refusing to pay if it comes to that in the end as to me this card is defected and is not okay
it seems to me like this is a very costly problem for you on your end I am sorry about that

don't be ;)... its OCUK and Galax WHO SHOULD BE!!!

i just couldn't lose any more money... i probably would have gone again...but i wasn't offered free returns?! :(... so i'm out! what the hell Galax!!!

I think this may be because I am in the UK as this may not cost them as much I can understand if you are from outside the UK though why you have to pay if that's the case for you.
But yes what the hell Galax

i should be refunded delivery because its a bad batch!!!

Again that sounds like an amazing wish and maybe if you speak to them about it something may happen but a lot of the times companies will not refund shipping cost both going and coming back keeps costs down.
If we could get a solid nod from GALAX that the bad batch was sent to OCUK then we could get somewhere but talking to GALAX is like talking to the back of a spoon
