Looking at getting a new combi drill as I've only got a crappy black and decker nicad here that is heavy and poor performing.

Budget is up to £150 really. Have used a Hitachi Li-on in the past (it's my drill, but I keep it at my parents along with the vast majority of my tools) and been relatively happy.

Use is standard DIY, walls seem to be dry lined so no real requirement for an SDS right now (got a Bosch SDS at my folks too).

Are the Makitas / DeWalts at £100ish any good? Or should I just pick up another Hitachi? Anyone got any experience of Ryobi One Plus too? Envisage in time that I'll need more kit (e.g. Jigsaw) so maybe buying into a kit system isn't a bad idea.

I got the £100 Makita from B&Q, Ive basically refurbished the whole of downstairs and it is the best tool I have by some way. 2 batteries so always ready to go. Also handled 120mm holesaw through 18mm ply with ease. Or 10mm Through two walls etc..

I also have Makita mitre saw and circular saw, love their tools.

The cheaper £100 dewalt, hitachi, bosch and makita drill/drivers are DIY tools. They will have lower drill and drive speeds, but should be fine for most DIY tasks. All usually have 3 year warranty if you register online and should be able to get spares for them long after that. i can still get spares for my Dewalt jigsaw that is like 10 years old!

You can pay a bit more and get something in the £150 price range, like the Dewalt DCD785 and get faster drilling speeds plus a trade rated tool, but probably overkill for a bit of diy.

Makita, dewalt and Bosch all have a great lineup of 18v powertools, so whichever you choose you should be happy with them. Makita has a 18v hedgetrimmer that works with the same battery system which could be handy.

One thing worth looking into is that someone on here said that some of the Makita tools use a different battery system. Maybe someone can confirm if this is the case. I know that all Dewalt 18v tools share the same battery system.

If you are going for the 10.8v range, don't get Makita, go with Bosch. I've had both sets and the makita drill driver is crap!!!! The bosch drill driver and impact driver are both amazing!

Very true I have the Bosch set and a mate has the Makita set and the 2ah batts make a big difference I paid £158 for the Bosch though vs the £130 for Makita they should be ok for home use though

I have mostly ryobi one plus stuff and I do a reasonable amount of DIY with it and find it more than good enough, I think one of my drills is on the way out as make a bit of grinding noise, but its about 5 years old and be used to mix lots of tile adhesive and plaster!

I have two chargers and 4 batteries and that gives me pretty much enough for anything as can have two charging whilst using two.

I have two drills, angle grinder, hedge trimmer, strimmer, detail sander, garden vac & staple gun. (think thats it!) will also get jigsaw if my current corded one dies ( or I find a good excuse!)

I love the Hitachi pone I got from screwfixy for £89.

Cracking bit of kit and cheap batteries. Felt a lot nicer to play with than the makita's around this price range also.

The LXT range use the universal batteries. The B&Q specials use a slightly different battery, but I believe you can easily mod them - probably worth spending the extra few quid, even if just for availability of replacements in future.

If buying now, I'd look at buying both of these, or just the drill if you don't want the driver

O got given a Ryobi one plus combi drill for christmas and for diy use its brilliant, can't fault it at all.

+1 for the Hitachi 18v drills. It's what I've got at my folks and a decent bit of kit for the money.

Kind of tempted by a Bosch 18v at £150 on Screwfix.
