Some scary looking numbers in here, we pay £350 p/m rent to the Girlfriends parents on a 3 Bedroom semi with detached garage, 74 foot by 40foot back garden overlooking fields and a driveway that fits a 26foot caravan & 2 cars on it with room to spare.

Just the two of us here, not sure about any of the bills other than food which is about £60-80 a week.

£320 a month for 1 bed flat next to Newcastle city centre

your rent won't even be close to covering the mortgage surely

This thread makes me nervous about ever moving back to the UK :p In-laws own our flat, so no rent, and a total of about £90/month for all our bills. Even if we were paying for the flat, previous tenant paid about £120/month rent I think.

Not rented a place in the UK for 4 years now, though I seem to remember the last place in Edinburgh (2 bed flat) was around:

£600 rent
£60ish gas/electric
£110 council tax
£25 phone/broadband
£12 TV licence
£12? contents insurance

So...£819 in total? Split between two of us. Blimey, looking at those numbers, I've no idea how we afforded that at the time...

Scares me to think about moving out, Only earning £1100 a month after tax.

It's a shame that I enjoy my job so it's not really in my interest to leave just for money.

I got some luck 6 years ago and got a council house. Mouldy or not its still quite cheap.

rent - £220
council tax - £65 ( after 25% single occupance discount)
Elec - £100 (thats my estimate due to winter and the upcoming bill)
Phone/ Interwebs - £60

This thread makes me sad, it's well over £1k pm for rent for a 1 bed flat in one of the cheaper cantons in Switzerland!

It's all relative to disposable income though - no harm in paying more rent if it means you're salary is significantly more to leave you better off.

You could be paying £400 in rent but only bringing home £1500, or paying £2000 but taking home £8000.......

£900 P.c.m :(

I think most people on that income (myself until recently) would have to house share. Otherwise all of your income goes on bills/rent, and you cannot save anything.

Not being able to save means you're essentially trapped.

I clearly need to leave London

3 bed flat in SE11, each of us.

Rent: £550pcm
Bills generally come to around £65, covers council tax, water, gas, TV license and Sky and anything else.

Our first place was a small 2 bed semi, with a drive but no garage and a very modest back garden, costs were as follows:

Rent: £525
Council tax: £101
Gas/elec: £85
TV licence: £11
Home insurance (contents only) £12
Water: £23
Phone line: £12
Internet (specialist provider): £20
Sky: £26

= £815

Those were just the household bills, but you have food, mobile phone, etc etc on top of that + car running costs, life/unemployment insurance, credit card/loan repayments, car repayments and so on and so forth (depending on your circumstances obviously).

We were spending around £1200 a month in total, not including spending money for socialising/takeaways etc. That was all extra.
