Hi,

I'm trying to decide between a new laptop or diy build a desktop.

I generally use the computer for internet and watching films (80%), some word/excel applications (18%) and occasional photoshop/illustrator (2%).

So compared to buying a new Toshiba Satellite Pro R50-B-12W Laptop @£400, how much would a similar spec desktop cost me to build?

I already have a monitor, keyboard & mouse and desktop case with DVD drive.

I would like a SSD drive, but doesn't need to be much capacity as I have an external harddrive, (that i'd hopefully build back inside as a 2nd drive).

It's hard to build a decent PC for £400 without OS....

But a £400 laptop will absolutely suck, and a £500 PC will dick all over a £500 laptop.

Laptops start to get usable at £450 and are decent above £700.

PC's are tricky to build at all at £400, but at £470 you can build one that will do anything apart from play the most recent games above medium settings

cheers for the responses! I'm currently using a laptop that is struggling, but still alive. Valid point on the outlay, I'm not gaming, but if i am going to invest in new hardware, then it should be an upgrade and with some future proofing... hmm next stage discuss with wife... ;)
