Retro turbo for around 3k?

If you want cheap and jap. Then have a look at a Cherry turbo, or even a Bluebird ZX turbo.

An old Impreza would be where my money went for turbo goodness, can pick a tatty one up from under a grand but it'll only have about 220bhp, for 3k you'd have your pick of the market. Parts are very very cheap with so many of them around and they're quite nice to work on too, i can't see them being much worse on fuel than any contemporary 2.0 turbo, they're all going to be terrible when driven properly surely?

Same for me. They are slightly worse on fuel than a 2wd Turbo, but then they are great to drive compared to a FWD Turbo.

MR2's would be my 2wd choice, but I have only driven a non-turbo.

I had a 900 turbo classic, what a car that was, very quick mine had been fettled somewhat not sure what bhp it was, but a was a hoot, used to put smoke in the cabin in 3rd gear.
I have had an Imprezza and have to say was easily faster than that.
Would love another and am on the lookout for a classic but cannot get my thoughts away from a e28 m535i.
Got a few more pennies to get together get as decent ones command around 7k odd.
Oh I should say the Saab handled like it was on rails.

Thanks for the respones, Just making my way looking for examples of most of the stuff mentioned. Ive already owned a saab 9-5 aero with stage 1 remap around 270bhp I did like it was nice and quick but i wanted more and iirc the engines in the 9-5 were at their limits around 300.

Makes me wonder if i will get caught up into that whole i need more power mind frame again if i get another turbo! Wouldn't mind an old 9000 aero iirc you can tune them well over 300hp on stock internals.

Still miss my '91 Supra, kept it at the stock 300bhp and it was bulletproof with scary performance :)

Don't know what price is like, but the Volvo 480 is a very rare sight these days. Volvo's first ever FWD car.

The MR2 has to be a strong consideration for performance and looks alone, but bear in mind that they are all imports (possible insurance issues), they do bite if driven with a fist of ham, and they aren't the easiest things to work on.

Whoever suggested the Octavia VRS, the first generation Octavia is hardly a "retro" car yet.

It's hardly a fun car to drive either compared to the other options being chucked around.

Quick enough for a spacious family car, but this sounds like the OP is buying a fun toy, the vRS isn't that (in my experience) it's just like a Mondeo for lugging prams and pushchairs around but with a turbo.
