I know it'd be more definitive to phone VM direct and ask them but I can't be bothered to go through the hassle of explaining to someone on the phone if it won't work.

I live in a shared house that's rented from an external landlord. We have a Virgin Media Superhub but I don't think it's the latest version, my neighbour has a newer looking one which matches VM's latest promotional stuff. When selecting what frequency to operate at we can select either 2.4GHz OR 5GHz but according to this the new ones are dual band so we could run both at the same time. Normally I'd just change this to 5GHz and be done with it but one of our housemates has an old laptop that won't work with 5GHz. The speed difference between the two is almost double in my experience so I am keen to use 5GHz. We have 100Mbit/s but get equivalent 30/40Mbit/s when using 2.4GHz in my experience.

If I call VM as a resident but not the account holder are they likely to give us the newer version of the router? We don't have a land line so it'd have to be from my mobile so I have no way of proving over the phone that I live at the address I do. I doubt my landlord is going to want to go to the hassle of calling VM for us and explaining to fix something that, to a non-techy, seems a non-issue.

Anyone got any advice? p.s. purposely breaking the modem and getting it replaced is not an option :p

I would hope they wouldn't even speak to you as you're not the account holder.

LL buys Virgin and allows you the use of Virgin. You need to speak to LL.

Virgin have no contract with you, they have a contract with the LL.

Correct you need the account number and password before they'll even consider talking about an account.

Your only option is to talk to the LL or buy your own cable router.

Meh, that's what I was fearing. Luckily my room is right next to the router so I can get away with having a 2 metre cat6 plugged directly into my server. I'll buy a wireless card for it and make my own super lame but super fast wifi network. I'll be sure to show it to any girls who come round.

Thanks for your help.

TP-LINK TL-WDR3500 £35 and will solve your problem if you don't want to try getting the LL to sort it.

if it were me i'd be tempted to accidentaly spill some tea, coffe into it there by requiring a new one

however there is free software that will show all wifi and the bands used it could be that the band your using has interference from another close source

the program i used was called inSSIDer good for also showing weak spots in your coverage

You could replace the wireless adapter in his laptop for about £10 and gain 5ghz ability. I did it for my GF's laptop when we were getting interference from next door and it worked like a charm. Just throwing it out there.

This is the best solution, connect to a wireless AP, they normally have an inbuilt switch too so you have the best of everything in your situation.

Putting the router in modem mode and using an Asus something or other is the way most go but in your situation I'd go with the above.
