Hi I'm looking at upgrading my well outdated graphics cards, currently running two hd4980 I think.

My budget was £250
Everything I'm running is amd so was looking staying that way.

I saw the above card on here powercolor r9 290x 8192MB
So was going to push the extra £70 for a 8gb card. I read somewhere that for 4k (as and when I upgraded my monitor) a 8gb memory would be a must is this correct?

Secondly I've read mixed reviews about powercolor themselves. Seems it's 50/50 if you will get a stable card or not. Dose anyone have this card if so have you had any problems?

My other choice of card near my budget would have been the sapphire r9 290 viper-x reviews seem good. Mhz and process Stream is lower tho. But I'm sure I won't notice compared to what I'm upgrading from.

Dose anyone have any advice for me?
Thanks

There's no point in spending the extra money getting the 8GB model, unless you are getting 2-3 cards. A single 290x won't give you playable frame rate at 4K, so 4GB or 8GB it wouldn't really make much difference.

The only problem with this response is, take a game like Shadow of mordor. The Ultra textures require 6Gb of vram. So 4k or not you have a game right there that would use it.

(Only game I know of that will use 6Gb of vram for textures)

Unless you're going to live on Mordor......:D I'd grab the 4 gig card; its the one I'm eyeing right now :D

you do need at least 2 cards for 4k; if your going 4k; then yea 8 gig cards make more sense........:)

grab the 4gb; and game way :D

If you're considering a 290X, it's def worth the bit extra for twice the vram. A couple of games already use 6GB+ @ 1080P / 1440P. So it's not unreasonably to assume 4K games will soon start utilizing more as well.

We've got a 8GB MSI 290X and it's a beast. Faster than my previous 290X's.

Thanks guys sounds like the general consensus is go for 4gb. I do aim to get a second in a year or so to crossfire again if they fit in my case. They all look pretty beefy.

So my next question is would I see much difference between the 290 and the 290x? Also is there any brands to stay away from. Like I said above I keep reading bad things about powercolor but sadly they seem the cheapest and closest to my £250 budget

The Lightning currently on offer is the one I'd go for. Potential to clock well with an air cooler second to none.

For £250 green queens you should be looking at the MSI 290X Lightning.
